Leviticus 15

In this chapter of Leviticus, I was laying out the puzzle pieces and I came across several changes required in chapters I had already 'done'. Again in each case, the pieces, as in a well made puzzle, now seem to fit a little better and have clearer colour than before. I have to say to myself, If it looks wrong, it probably is wrong. But often I can't see it till I get more information. And I don't know from which quarter the information will arise.

In this chapter, of all things, it is the woman's monthly period נדה that tipped me off to change the Nazirite section of Numbers. Then the setting apart of the woman, essentially segregation, showed me that I had misused this word in four places, Job 30, Proverbs 15 and 17, and Numbers 15. Segregation in time (postpone) may also be a possibility. Amos 6:3 seems to allow this sense. Right now postpone is an artificial hapax created by my glossing. Perhaps it will stand.

I said in my last post that 'we may finish', but when I 'finish', what then? Hopefully the analysis of artificial hapaxes will continue and their numbers will reduce. I will also continue to refine the semantic domain structure because this leads me to question why the homonyms occur in the Hebrew.

Re his / her / its, it is very clear that the male pronoun suffix in Hebrew, as in traditional English, doubles as the generic male or female suffix. The principal seems to be that the female is distinguished in speech only when the whole group or the individual is female or can only be female.

This chapter clearly divides into two sections re uncleanness / defilement of each sub-class of earthling. From now on and retroactively, when reading it / its etc assume inanimate or non-specific personal. When reading he / him / his etc assume whatever the context may allow. Re the pronoun used with Yahweh or God, I generally use the male pronoun and allow the personal inference.

My temporal power to make changes to our tongue is limited.

וְזֹ֛את תִּהְיֶ֥ה טֻמְאָת֖וֹ בְּזוֹב֑וֹ רָ֣ר בְּשָׂר֞וֹ אֶת־זוֹב֗וֹ אֽוֹ־הֶחְתִּ֤ים בְּשָׂרוֹ֙ מִזּוֹב֔וֹ טֻמְאָת֖וֹ הִֽוא	3		And this will be his uncleanness in the discharge, his flesh oozes his discharge or his flesh is sealed from the discharge. His uncleanness it is.	3d	4C	10 20

וְאִ֕ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִגַּ֖ע בְּמִשְׁכָּב֑וֹ יְכַבֵּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	5		And anyone that touches his litter, will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4A	10 18
וְהַיֹּשֵׁב֙ עַֽל־הַכְּלִ֔י אֲשֶׁר־יֵשֵׁ֥ב עָלָ֖יו הַזָּ֑ב יְכַבֵּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	6		And one who sits on the vessel that the one with the discharge sat on, will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4A	15 18
וְהַנֹּגֵ֖עַ בִּבְשַׂ֣ר הַזָּ֑ב יְכַבֵּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	7		And one who touches the flesh of the one with the discharge, will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4B	9 18
וְכִֽי־יָרֹ֛ק הַזָּ֖ב בַּטָּה֑וֹר וְכִבֶּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	8		And if the one with the discharge spit on one that is clean, he will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4A	8 18
וְכָל־הַמֶּרְכָּ֗ב אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִרְכַּ֥ב עָלָ֛יו הַזָּ֖ב יִטְמָֽא	9		And every chariot that the one with the discharge rode on is unclean.	3d	3g	15
וְכָל־הַנֹּגֵ֗עַ בְּכֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִהְיֶ֣ה תַחְתָּ֔יו יִטְמָ֖א עַד־הָעָ֑רֶב וְהַנּוֹשֵׂ֣א אוֹתָ֔ם יְכַבֵּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	10		And anyone touching anything that was under him is unclean till evening, or who bears them, will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4B	20 24
וְכֹ֨ל אֲשֶׁ֤ר יִגַּע־בּוֹ֙ הַזָּ֔ב וְיָדָ֖יו לֹא־שָׁטַ֣ף בַּמָּ֑יִם וְכִבֶּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	11		And anyone that touches the one with the discharge and has not doused his hands in water, will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4C	17 18
וּכְלִי־חֶ֛רֶשׂ אֲשֶׁר־יִגַּע־בּ֥וֹ הַזָּ֖ב יִשָּׁבֵ֑ר וְכָל־כְּלִי־עֵ֔ץ יִשָּׁטֵ֖ף בַּמָּֽיִם	12		And vessels of earthenware that the one with the discharge touches will be broken, and any vessels of wood will be doused in water.	3d	4A	13 11
וְכִֽי־יִטְהַ֤ר הַזָּב֙ מִזּוֹב֔וֹ וְסָ֨פַר ל֜וֹ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֛ים לְטָהֳרָת֖וֹ וְכִבֶּ֣ס בְּגָדָ֑יו וְרָחַ֧ץ בְּשָׂר֛וֹ בְּמַ֥יִם חַיִּ֖ים וְטָהֵֽר	13		And when the one with the discharge is clean from his discharge, he will count for himself seven days for his cleansing, and will scour his garments, and will wash his flesh in living water and he will be clean.	3c	4C	28 13
וּבַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֗י יִֽקַּֽח־לוֹ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י תֹרִ֔ים א֥וֹ שְׁנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יוֹנָ֑ה וּבָ֣א ׀ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה אֶל־פֶּ֙תַח֙ אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד וּנְתָנָ֖ם אֶל־הַכֹּהֵֽן	14		And on the eighth day he will take for himself two turtledoves, or two squab of a dove, and will come before Yahweh to the door of the tent of engagement, and will give them to the priest.	3e	4B	20 20
וְעָשָׂ֤ה אֹתָם֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן אֶחָ֣ד חַטָּ֔את וְהָאֶחָ֖ד עֹלָ֑ה וְכִפֶּ֨ר עָלָ֧יו הַכֹּהֵ֛ן לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה מִזּוֹבֽוֹ	15		And the priest will make them, one a sin offering and the other a burnt offering, and the priest will make a cover-price for him before Yahweh for his discharge.	3c	4C	18 15
וְאִ֕ישׁ כִּֽי־תֵצֵ֥א מִמֶּ֖נּוּ שִׁכְבַת־זָ֑רַע וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֛יִם אֶת־כָּל־בְּשָׂר֖וֹ וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	16		And anyone from whom has gone forth an emission of seed, will wash in water all his flesh and be unclean till evening.	3d	4A	11 17
וְכָל־בֶּ֣גֶד וְכָל־ע֔וֹר אֲשֶׁר־יִהְיֶ֥ה עָלָ֖יו שִׁכְבַת־זָ֑רַע וְכֻבַּ֥ס בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	17		And any garment and any skin on which is an emission of seed, will be scoured in water and be unclean till evening.	3e	4B	17 12
וְאִשָּׁ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר יִשְׁכַּ֥ב אִ֛ישׁ אֹתָ֖הּ שִׁכְבַת־זָ֑רַע וְרָחֲצ֣וּ בַמַּ֔יִם וְטָמְא֖וּ עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	18		And a woman with whom a man lies down for an emission of seed, they will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3d	4B	14 13
וְאִשָּׁה֙ כִּֽי־תִהְיֶ֣ה זָבָ֔ה דָּ֛ם יִהְיֶ֥ה זֹבָ֖הּ בִּבְשָׂרָ֑הּ שִׁבְעַ֤ת יָמִים֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה בְנִדָּתָ֔הּ וְכָל־הַנֹּגֵ֥עַ בָּ֖הּ יִטְמָ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	19		And a woman that has a discharge of blood, it is her discharge from her flesh. Seven days she will be segregated, and anyone touching her will be unclean till evening.	3d	4C	16 23
וְכֹל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּשְׁכַּ֥ב עָלָ֛יו בְּנִדָּתָ֖הּ יִטְמָ֑א וְכֹ֛ל אֲשֶׁר־תֵּשֵׁ֥ב עָלָ֖יו יִטְמָֽא	20		And anything that she lies down on in her segregation is unclean, and all that she sits on is unclean.	3d	4A	14 10
וְכָל־הַנֹּגֵ֖עַ בְּמִשְׁכָּבָ֑הּ יְכַבֵּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	21		And anyone touching her litter, will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4A	10 18
וְכָל־הַנֹּגֵ֔עַ בְּכָל־כְּלִ֖י אֲשֶׁר־תֵּשֵׁ֣ב עָלָ֑יו יְכַבֵּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	22		And anyone touching any vessel which she has sat on, will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4B	16 18
וְאִ֨ם עַֽל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֜ב ה֗וּא א֧וֹ עַֽל־הַכְּלִ֛י אֲשֶׁר־הִ֥וא יֹשֶֽׁבֶת־עָלָ֖יו בְּנָגְעוֹ־ב֑וֹ יִטְמָ֖א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	23		And if on the litter itself or on the vessel that she sits on, in his touching it, he will be unclean till evening.	3c	4A	22 6
וְאִ֡ם שָׁכֹב֩ יִשְׁכַּ֨ב אִ֜ישׁ אֹתָ֗הּ וּתְהִ֤י נִדָּתָהּ֙ עָלָ֔יו וְטָמֵ֖א שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים וְכָל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֛ב אֲשֶׁר־יִשְׁכַּ֥ב עָלָ֖יו יִטְמָֽא	24		And if lying down, a man lies down with her and her segregation is on him, then he will be unclean seven days, and every litter which he lies down on will be unclean.	3d	4C	23 13
וְאִשָּׁ֡ה כִּֽי־יָזוּב֩ ז֨וֹב דָּמָ֜הּ יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֗ים בְּלֹא֙ עֶת־נִדָּתָ֔הּ א֥וֹ כִֽי־תָז֖וּב עַל־נִדָּתָ֑הּ כָּל־יְמֵ֞י ז֣וֹב טֻמְאָתָ֗הּ כִּימֵ֧י נִדָּתָ֛הּ תִּהְיֶ֖ה טְמֵאָ֥ה הִֽוא	25		And a woman that has a discharge of her blood many days, not from the period of her segregation, or if she is discharging over her segregation, all the days of the discharge of her uncleanness will be as the days of her segregation. Unclean she is.	3c	4B	25 18
כָּל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֞ב אֲשֶׁר־תִּשְׁכַּ֤ב עָלָיו֙ כָּל־יְמֵ֣י זוֹבָ֔הּ כְּמִשְׁכַּ֥ב נִדָּתָ֖הּ יִֽהְיֶה־לָּ֑הּ וְכָֽל־הַכְּלִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֵּשֵׁ֣ב עָלָ֔יו טָמֵ֣א יִהְיֶ֔ה כְּטֻמְאַ֖ת נִדָּתָֽהּ	26		Every litter that she lies down on all the days of her discharge is for her as the litter of her segregation, and every vessel that she sits on is unclean. It is as the uncleanness of her segregation.	3e	4C	24 20
וְכָל־הַנּוֹגֵ֥עַ בָּ֖ם יִטְמָ֑א וְכִבֶּ֧ס בְּגָדָ֛יו וְרָחַ֥ץ בַּמַּ֖יִם וְטָמֵ֥א עַד־הָעָֽרֶב	27		And anyone touching them is unclean, and will scour his garments and will wash in water and be unclean till evening.	3c	4A	9 18
וְאִֽם־טָהֲרָ֖ה מִזּוֹבָ֑הּ וְסָ֥פְרָה לָּ֛הּ שִׁבְעַ֥ת יָמִ֖ים וְאַחַ֥ר תִּטְהָֽר	28		But if she is clean from her discharge, then she will number for herself seven days, and after she will be clean.	3d	4A	8 13
וּבַיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁמִינִ֗י תִּֽקַּֽח־לָהּ֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י תֹרִ֔ים א֥וֹ שְׁנֵ֖י בְּנֵ֣י יוֹנָ֑ה וְהֵבִיאָ֤ה אוֹתָם֙ אֶל־הַכֹּהֵ֔ן אֶל־פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד	29		And on the eighth day, she will take for herself two turtledoves or two squab of a dove, and bring them to the priest to the door of the tent of engagement,	3e	4C	20 17
וְעָשָׂ֤ה הַכֹּהֵן֙ אֶת־הָאֶחָ֣ד חַטָּ֔את וְאֶת־הָאֶחָ֖ד עֹלָ֑ה וְכִפֶּ֨ר עָלֶ֤יהָ הַכֹּהֵן֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה מִזּ֖וֹב טֻמְאָתָֽהּ	30		And the priest will make the one a sin offering, and the other a burnt offering, and the priest will make a cover-price for her before Yahweh for the discharge of her uncleanness.	3e	4C	19 18
וְהִזַּרְתֶּ֥ם אֶת־בְּנֵי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִטֻּמְאָתָ֑ם וְלֹ֤א יָמֻ֙תוּ֙ בְּטֻמְאָתָ֔ם בְּטַמְּאָ֥ם אֶת־מִשְׁכָּנִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּתוֹכָֽם	31		So you will consecrate the children of Israel from their uncleanness, so they do not die in their uncleanness when they make unclean my dwelling-place that is among them.	3e	4C	14 21
זֹ֥את תּוֹרַ֖ת הַזָּ֑ב וַאֲשֶׁ֨ר תֵּצֵ֥א מִמֶּ֛נּוּ שִׁכְבַת־זֶ֖רַע לְטָמְאָה־בָֽהּ	32	f	This is the instruction for one with a discharge, or from whom has gone forth an emission of seed to be defiled in it,	3d	4A	5 16
וְהַדָּוָה֙ בְּנִדָּתָ֔הּ וְהַזָּב֙ אֶת־זוֹב֔וֹ לַזָּכָ֖ר וְלַנְּקֵבָ֑ה וּלְאִ֕ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִשְׁכַּ֖ב עִם־טְמֵאָֽה	33		Or of one infirm in her segregation, or one discharging his discharge, of the male or of the female, and of each that lies down with one who is unclean.	3e	4A	21 10
