Exodus 39

Alas, the cunning work of the KJV is so expressive. But it doesn't fit my concordance rules. I have already so compromised the common words for movement - go walk come enter etc, that I don't want to do a similar compromise with words for doing, making, construction, etc. So how does one describe the weaving (already used gloss somewhere else) and the clear sense that this is a form of art with words like do and device? Stretch. JB has the idea of damask, "a figured woven fabric with a pattern visible on both sides, typically used for table linen and upholstery". Whole bunches of suggestions in that sentence. Plenty of glosses I have not yet used. But the myriad possibilities will be delayed till the next time I read this section and create some poetry, if ever. Perhaps someone else will love the text as others have done and use art to alleviate the perceived violence in this canon.

The difficulty is that all the inventiveness in English will belie the mundane common words in Hebrew and create artificial hapaxes in the host language. O well, ... So be it.

I have a few other problems. Sometimes I wonder if the puzzle is getting away from me, like an Escher staircase or a puzzle that will not lie flat on the surface. Perhaps it is even a self-portrait. I chuckled at a misread pun in verse 43. The use of its in this chapter is questionable, mostly everything is hers that is made so most of the its are hers, except verses 35, 36, 39 where they are all his. The dwelling of the Mystery is in the female. But the Mystery is male.

But in verse 23 one can read אתה as you rather than the את with an enclitic female pronoun ה. And behold they had made you. The computer was wrong of course.

One of my problems as noted above has to do with the pervasive word עשה do/make/undertake. And other possible glosses. (I have far worse problems than this but unrelated to translation, except that everything is related to our internal enemies. They are too strong for us according to the Psalms, but we are to be made stronger than they according to Torah, e.g. Exodus 23. The Psalms are a corrective key for reading Torah, illustrating how to use the power of God for maturity rather than violence.)

I don't know what the red dye crimson scarlet (תוֹלַ֥עַת שָׁנִ֖י) is from. I suppose I could believe it is from doubly (שׁני) crushed shells of some sort of worm (תולע), but certainly the two words are always combined grammatically in the list where the other colours are not. The pairing occurs only in Exodus  (25-28, 35, 36, 38, 39). I expect we will back up into these chapters after my tentative decisions here.

Exodus 28, largely repeating parts of this chapter, is next on my lists.
