There are also places where one might be tempted to adjust the text, e.g. KJV, NIV v 22, all of you, meaning all you peoples, but the text is all of them (omitted by some translations). NIV, KJV adjust the letters without comment to כלכם, from כלם. The text could easily be referring back to all the prophets. Seems more likely to me. One does not have to make complete sentences out of every verse in a heated conversation.
Remember also that spirit and wind are the same in Hebrew. There are no capital letters in the Hebrew so anyone dithering about spirit vs Spirit is just windy.
I was once told by serious folks that even the good prophet could lie and poor old M in this chapter was cited as evidence. No, my dear friends, M was being sarcastic and conforming to the king's wishes. You could make the argument that he was protecting himself. But the response of the king suggests otherwise. He was on the spot whether he was true or false, so better to be true.
Verse 48. JB leaves out the second sentence. The text is disputed. But it is there and there is at least one other place where I have needed a word for a deputized leader (deputy might have been useful). Monitor, I have used for נצב a dozen times. This stem is also used for monument, taking a stand, stand firm, and I used it once in the Psalms - isn't that odd? Should I revise that verse?
אַתָּ֣ה הִ֭צַּבְתָּ כָּל־גְּבוּל֣וֹת אָ֑רֶץ קַ֥יִץ וָ֝חֹ֗רֶף אַתָּ֥ה יְצַרְתָּם | 74.17 | You yourself laid out all the borders of earth. Summer and autumn you yourself fashioned them. | הצבת you laid out נצב |
I am often unsure what to do in these cases. I am unsure also about the holy word in verse 47 - the sanctuary. Clearly there are good sanctuaries and there are bad ones. But how does one tell? I have used holy prostitutes in two other places. But there the word in plural, one הקדשׁים the other הקדשׁות i.e. one male, the other female. Here it is singular. It is certainly not Sodomite, a coined word that misses the point of the Sodom story completely. Here too the word shrive appears as my gloss. Strange, but consistent.
Happy to hear other ideas on any of these verses.
