Exodus 7

Often the more difficult areas to translate are those you are familiar with so you think you know them already. It is not so. Exodus as I noted earlier is about 'sending' not so much about 'letting go'. Everywhere that I have restored sending out to this story, an aspect of its intent seems to be clearer to me. [I have reviewed all posts where I failed to use this gloss for שׁלח.]

There is a serious responsibility on Pharaoh to send rather than just to let go. It is an active change of heart in the Egyptian. Note that Pharaoh's heart is not always hardened, it is also heavy and resolute. They are in this case quite different stems. Just because it is a story does not require that it be over-simplified. The change of heart only happens in the face of the death of what is precious to him.

You might want to read that again. It is even that the bootstrap of our consciousness is a consciousness of death. This leads to ethics, value, and love. Nothing short of that is acceptable.

Such a message can have a real story frame. That is why these chapters of Exodus read like a comic book. The crucial aspect is the awakening of the responsibility of the world to send out its people so that they may serve the mystery. It is not just about Moses and Israel or even blood and frogs and magic wands (or dragons or snakes).

וַיַּשְׁלִ֙יכוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ מַטֵּ֔הוּ וַיִּהְי֖וּ לְתַנִּינִ֑ם וַיִּבְלַ֥ע מַטֵּֽה־אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֶת־מַטֹּתָֽם	12		And they cast each his rod, and they became dragons, but the rod of Aaron swallowed their rods.	3e	4B	15 12
וַיֶּחֱזַק֙ לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֔ה וְלֹ֥א שָׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵהֶ֑ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָֽה פ	13		And he made the heart of Pharaoh resolute and he did not pay heed to them, as Yahweh had spoken.	3e	4B	14 8
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה כָּבֵ֖ד לֵ֣ב פַּרְעֹ֑ה מֵאֵ֖ן לְשַׁלַּ֥ח הָעָֽם	14		And Yahweh said to Moses, Heavy is the heart of Pharaoh. He will not send the people out.	3e	4C	13 7
לֵ֣ךְ אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֞ה בַּבֹּ֗קֶר הִנֵּה֙ יֹצֵ֣א הַמַּ֔יְמָה וְנִצַּבְתָּ֥ לִקְרָאת֖וֹ עַל־שְׂפַ֣ת הַיְאֹ֑ר וְהַמַּטֶּ֛ה אֲשֶׁר־נֶהְפַּ֥ךְ לְנָחָ֖שׁ תִּקַּ֥ח בְּיָדֶֽךָ	15	B	Go to Pharaoh in the morning. כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה בְּזֹ֣את תֵּדַ֔ע כִּ֖י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֑ה הִנֵּ֨ה אָנֹכִ֜י מַכֶּ֣ה ׀ בַּמַּטֶּ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָדִ֗י עַל־הַמַּ֛יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּיְאֹ֖ר וְנֶהֶפְכ֥וּ לְדָֽם	17	C	Thus says Yahweh, In this you will know that I am Yahweh. וְהַדָּגָ֧ה אֲשֶׁר־בַּיְאֹ֛ר תָּמ֖וּת וּבָאַ֣שׁ הַיְאֹ֑ר וְנִלְא֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם לִשְׁתּ֥וֹת מַ֖יִם מִן־הַיְאֹֽר ס	18		And the fish that are in the Nile will die, and the Nile will stink, and Egypt will be repelled to imbibe water from the Nile.	3c	4B	15 12

וַיַּֽעֲשׂוּ־כֵ֛ן חַרְטֻמֵּ֥י מִצְרַ֖יִם בְּלָטֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֶּחֱזַ֤ק לֵב־פַּרְעֹה֙ וְלֹא־שָׁמַ֣ע אֲלֵהֶ֔ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֥ר יְהוָֽה	22		And the magicians of Egypt did so with their incantations. And he made the heart of Pharaoh resolute and he did not pay heed to them as Yahweh had spoken.	3d	4C	14 20
וַיִּ֣פֶן פַּרְעֹ֔ה וַיָּבֹ֖א אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ וְלֹא־שָׁ֥ת לִבּ֖וֹ גַּם־לָזֹֽאת	23		And Pharaoh faced about and he entered his house, but he did not set his heart even to this.	3e	4B	11 8
וַיַּחְפְּר֧וּ כָל־מִצְרַ֛יִם סְבִיבֹ֥ת הַיְאֹ֖ר מַ֣יִם לִשְׁתּ֑וֹת כִּ֣י לֹ֤א יָֽכְלוּ֙ לִשְׁתֹּ֔ת מִמֵּימֵ֖י הַיְאֹֽר	24		And all Egypt excavated surrounding the Nile for water to imbibe, for they were not able to imbibe from the waters of the Nile.	3c	4C	15 11
וַיִּמָּלֵ֖א שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים אַחֲרֵ֥י הַכּוֹת־יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־הַיְאֹֽר פ	25		And seven days were fulfilled, after Yahweh had struck the Nile.	3e	4B	8 11
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה בֹּ֖א אֶל־פַּרְעֹ֑ה וְאָמַרְתָּ֣ אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַׁלַּ֥ח אֶת־עַמִּ֖י וְיַֽעַבְדֻֽנִי	26		And Yahweh said to Moses, Go in to Pharaoh, and say to him, Thus says Yahweh, Send out my people that they may serve me.	3e	4C	12 21
וְאִם־מָאֵ֥ן אַתָּ֖ה לְשַׁלֵּ֑חַ הִנֵּ֣ה אָנֹכִ֗י נֹגֵ֛ף אֶת־כָּל־גְּבוּלְךָ֖ בַּֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים	27		And if you will not send, behold, I will plague all your borders with frogs.	3d	4B	10 16
וְשָׁרַ֣ץ הַיְאֹר֮ צְפַרְדְּעִים֒ וְעָלוּ֙ וּבָ֣אוּ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ וּבַחֲדַ֥ר מִשְׁכָּבְךָ֖ וְעַל־מִטָּתֶ֑ךָ וּבְבֵ֤ית עֲבָדֶ֙יךָ֙ וּבְעַמֶּ֔ךָ וּבְתַנּוּרֶ֖יךָ וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶֽיךָ	28		And the Nile will teem with frogs. They will ascend, and enter into your house, and your inner rooms where you lie down, and over your couch, and into the house of your servants, and over your people, and into your ovens, and into your warehouses.	3e	4C	32 21
וּבְכָ֥ה וּֽבְעַמְּךָ֖ וּבְכָל־עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ יַעֲל֖וּ הַֽצְפַרְדְּעִֽים	29		And into you, and into your people, and into all your servants, the frogs will ascend.	3e	4A	11 7
