Should I say - who is this Lord? It makes no sense to remove the personal name and substitute a euphemism. There is then no one to address the question to: Who are you?
Sometimes I think of Yahweh as the self-reflection of the human, both individual and corporate.
Does this psalm require explanation?
Psalms 93 | ||
יְהוָ֣ה מָלָךְ֮ גֵּא֪וּת לָ֫בֵ֥שׁ לָבֵ֣שׁ יְ֭הוָה עֹ֣ז הִתְאַזָּ֑ר אַף־תִּכּ֥וֹן תֵּ֝בֵ֗ל בַּל־תִּמּֽוֹט | a ihvh mlç gaut lbw lbw ihvh yoz htazr af-ticon tbl bl-timo't | 1 Yahweh reigns, pride clothed. Clothed is Yahweh, strength self-girded. Indeed the world is established so it will not move. |

עֵֽדֹתֶ֨יךָ ׀ נֶאֶמְנ֬וּ מְאֹ֗ד לְבֵיתְךָ֥ נַאֲוָה־קֹ֑דֶשׁ יְ֝הוָ֗ה לְאֹ֣רֶךְ יָמִֽים | h ydotiç namnu maod lbitç navh-qodw ihvh laorç imim | 5 Your testimonies are very faithful. Holiness is lovely in your house, Yahweh, for length of days. |
But how could Yahweh be a reflection of the human?
Because we try to manage the unfolding world in time, and we together have marginal successes. We together also have colossal failures, so we correct ourselves. We write and rewrite our histories, trying to see what is right and what is wrong. The rivers certainly lift up their voices against us, and we surf them. We develop guidelines, instruction, laws if you like, not absolutes, but working relationships, competitive ideologies, but still cooperative, extending beyond the individual yet dependent on the individual. We learn slowly, perhaps too slowly. Will we be a forgotten accident of history? Will anyone remember this species that emerged from the ground (adm)? Will anyone be left who remembers?
I am surprised that I left so many roots separate (dc, dca, dch, dci) when they are obviously related by the idea of crush. I have 'explained' something. I interpret the hapax dci as crushing waves. The addition of waves is a word not in the text - wave is the root /gl/. I don't call them crashing waves like CJB, because I think they are crushing. The psalm is talking about the impact of actions against Yahweh. These waves lift themselves up against this Yahweh. Who is Yahweh that waves would care?
In the midst of the turmoil, there is also establishment both of world and of a throne, in and out of time, from everlasting you are, your testimonies faithful, holy, lovely, for length of days. And here in the north, the days are lengthening. May we survive the crushing of our hopes, the fears of our age and our era.
Addendum - thinking on the base question: pride clothed, and strength self-girded are both unique phrases in the Scripture. These four roots in their two paired sequences are nowhere else used together.
