It's always nice when things stick together better. In the programming world we call this coherence. Contrast this with incoherence, (unrelated to Charles Williams' theological co-inherence). I have just been verifying the rules about converting hireq to i and it turns out several of them were too tight.
The general rule is that a stem that contains yod allows hireq by default and a few do not. A stem that does not contain yod does not render hireq by default and a large number are exceptions. That large number of exceptions is becoming larger as I loosen some of the rules. Some rules are loosened because the stem is rarely used so its full variety is not in the text. Some are loosened because the restriction to a specific form is not required. It remains to be seen if the strategy is optimal.
The reduction in exceptions to the exceptions was dramatic. I was able to test them with a simple concatenation of rules and then weed out the ones that really needed the rule. 109 stems with exceptions based on prefix reduced to 15. Talk about being too careful in earlier stages of the project.
The number of stems that allow i and do not themselves contain a yod is now 427. Two months ago according to my last post on this subject, it appears to have been only 93. In contrast at present, the number of stems that contain a yod and yet do not render hireq is merely 7. This has remained quite stable as more test data is added.
Another example drawn out from this mix: w-c-r, another word with multiple connotations depending on the context or the whim of the translator :). Isn't it interesting that strong drink and economy are the same stem.
This one retains its exceptions to the exception and allows hireq to be rendered as i only when the word form has neither suffix or prefix, or it has a suffix, or the prefix is c, or l. It will also interpret the tsere as i for the word form with neither suffix or prefix and there is a qamats in the word. This being highly specific, I expect I could not loosen the test any further.
