Daniel 11

Well, who knew that this would be my last chapter? (Two more after this to post, but they were done first.) Not me. None of my last chapters was deliberate. Over the past two years, after I had written my prediction algorithm, my next chapter was largely selected to the extent that the 'translation' was predicted by previous work I had done. It was the path of least resistance. So in some sense, this chapter, of all, was the least guessed by my algorithms. (But it is in Hebrew, not Aramaic.)

This chapter contributes to the dating of the writing of the book under the name of Daniel at about 164 BC. Yes the author is 'pretending' to be writing in the 6th century and 'predicting' all these things. Such prediction would be soothsaying, not prophecy. God does not do such soothsaying. God is a musician, and a scientist, has no need of superstition, but loves mystery.

And what is a prophet? A prophet is someone who tells the truth about consequences. If you dontinue in this, then that will follow. For example, if you allow everyone to have guns, you will have mass shootings and accidental shootings. If you exploit the earth's resources only for your own gain, you will have inequity, and mass migrations of people who are in need. Or, in contrast, we could be positive about prophecy: Give, and it will be given to you, full measure, pressed down and overflowing.

Now to Daniel and my selected glosses. It appears I have not yet used the word dominion. One more loaded word gone. The word in Genesis 1:26 is not משׁל, the stem which predominates here, but רדה. What constitutes great governance?

Here too are many instances of חזק. The south is identified with Egypt, mentioned explicitly in verse 8 in the Hebrew, but used throughout in the Greek text.

JB is very free with its translation here. It reads like an adventure story. It is probably quite suitable to the genre of a text providing broad sweeps of history in a few words.  The clues in the text provide a great deal of accurate (though vague) historical reference up to verse 45. See for instance the pages here. As this author says, a good study Bible (such as the Jerusalem Bible I have been using) will lay out the referents. I thought I might, but it is out of scope for this project.

All is about governance, self-governance, the governance of nations, and so on. The abomination is not confined to the history Daniel speaks of. It occurs today. Verse 37 applies to a T to the self-magnification of some. (Only I can fix this, etc.) Note how positively attraction is put in parallel with God.

Verse 45 can be my epitaph, my last words read in Hebrew and written in English for this reading project: and he will come to his end and there is no help for him.

וְנִשָּׂ֥א הֶהָמ֖וֹן וְרָ֣ם לְבָב֑וֹ וְהִפִּ֛יל רִבֹּא֖וֹת וְלֹ֥א יָעֽוֹז	12		And he will bear the tumult, and his heart will be exalted. And he will make tens of thousands fall but will not be strong.	3d	4B	11 9

וּבָעִתִּ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם רַבִּ֥ים יַֽעַמְד֖וּ עַל־מֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֑גֶב וּבְנֵ֣י ׀ פָּרִיצֵ֣י עַמְּךָ֗ יִֽנַּשְּׂא֛וּ לְהַעֲמִ֥יד חָז֖וֹן וְנִכְשָֽׁלוּ	14		And in those times, many will stand against the king of the south. And the children of the burglars of your people will lift themselves up to install a vision, and they will stumble.	3d	4B	17 20
וְיָבֹא֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַצָּפ֔וֹן וְיִשְׁפֹּךְ֙ סֽוֹלֲלָ֔ה וְלָכַ֖ד עִ֣יר מִבְצָר֑וֹת וּזְרֹע֤וֹת הַנֶּ֙גֶב֙ לֹ֣א יַעֲמֹ֔דוּ וְעַם֙ מִבְחָרָ֔יו וְאֵ֥ין כֹּ֖חַ לַעֲמֹֽד	15		And the king of the north will come in and pour out a ramp, and conquer an enclosed city. And the arms of the south will not stand, and his chosen people. And there is no power to stand.	3e	4C	21 23
וְיַ֨עַשׂ הַבָּ֤א אֵלָיו֙ כִּרְצוֹנ֔וֹ וְאֵ֥ין עוֹמֵ֖ד לְפָנָ֑יו וְיַעֲמֹ֥ד בְּאֶֽרֶץ־הַצְּבִ֖י וְכָלָ֥ה בְיָדֽוֹ	16		And the one who comes to him will do according to his favour, and none will stand before him. And he will stand on the land of status, and it will be consumed by his hand.	3e	4C	17 15
וְיָשֵׂ֣ם ׀ פָּ֠נָיו לָב֞וֹא בְּתֹ֧קֶף כָּל־מַלְכוּת֛וֹ וִישָׁרִ֥ים עִמּ֖וֹ וְעָשָׂ֑ה וּבַ֤ת הַנָּשִׁים֙ יִתֶּן־ל֣וֹ לְהַשְׁחִיתָ֔הּ וְלֹ֥א תַעֲמֹ֖ד וְלֹא־ל֥וֹ תִהְיֶֽה	17		And he will set his face to enter with the energy of all his kingdom, and the upright with him, and he will act. And he will give to him the daughter of the women to destroy her, but she will not stand nor will she be his.	3c	4C	22 21

וּזְרֹע֥וֹת הַשֶּׁ֛טֶף יִשָּׁטְפ֥וּ מִלְּפָנָ֖יו וְיִשָּׁבֵ֑רוּ וְגַ֖ם נְגִ֥יד בְּרִֽית	22		And the arms of the downpour will overflow before him and will be shattered, and even the herald of a covenant.	3d	4A	17 6
וּמִן־הִֽתְחַבְּר֥וּת אֵלָ֖יו יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה מִרְמָ֑ה וְעָלָ֥ה וְעָצַ֖ם בִּמְעַט־גּֽוֹי	23		And from the partnership with him, he will act deceitfully, and will come up, and will become numerous with an insignificant nation.	3e	4B	12 10
בְּשַׁלְוָ֞ה וּבְמִשְׁמַנֵּ֣י מְדִינָה֮ יָבוֹא֒ וְעָשָׂ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר לֹא־עָשׂ֤וּ אֲבֹתָיו֙ וַאֲב֣וֹת אֲבֹתָ֔יו בִּזָּ֧ה וְשָׁלָ֛ל וּרְכ֖וּשׁ לָהֶ֣ם יִבְז֑וֹר וְעַ֧ל מִבְצָרִ֛ים יְחַשֵּׁ֥ב מַחְשְׁבֹתָ֖יו וְעַד־עֵֽת	24		With an ease of approach, and into the stoutest provinces he will come. And he will do what his ancestors did not do, nor the ancestors of his ancestors. He will despise and spoil, and their property he will dispel. And against enclosures, he will plot his devices, and even for a time.	3c	4C	39 15
וְיָעֵר֩ כֹּח֨וֹ וּלְבָב֜וֹ עַל־מֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּגֶב֮ בְּחַ֣יִל גָּדוֹל֒ וּמֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֗גֶב יִתְגָּרֶה֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה בְּחַֽיִל־גָּד֥וֹל וְעָצ֖וּם עַד־מְאֹ֑ד וְלֹ֣א יַעֲמֹ֔ד כִּֽי־יַחְשְׁב֥וּ עָלָ֖יו מַחֲשָׁבֽוֹת	25		And he will rouse his power and his heart against the king of the south with a great force, and the king of the south will be stroked into battle with a very great and numerous force, but he will not stand, for they devise against him devices.	3e	4B	42 15
וְאֹכְלֵ֧י פַת־בָּג֛וֹ יִשְׁבְּר֖וּהוּ וְחֵיל֣וֹ יִשְׁט֑וֹף וְנָפְל֖וּ חֲלָלִ֥ים רַבִּֽים	26		For those who eat his ration will shatter him, and his force will overflow, and many will fall profaned.	3c	4B	15 8
וּשְׁנֵיהֶ֤ם הַמְּלָכִים֙ לְבָבָ֣ם לְמֵרָ֔ע וְעַל־שֻׁלְחָ֥ן אֶחָ֖ד כָּזָ֣ב יְדַבֵּ֑רוּ וְלֹ֣א תִצְלָ֔ח כִּי־ע֥וֹד קֵ֖ץ לַמּוֹעֵֽד	27		And both the kings, their heart to evil, that over one table they will speak a lie, and will not prosper, for yet the end is for an appointed time.	3e	4C	24 10
וְיָשֹׁ֤ב אַרְצוֹ֙ בִּרְכ֣וּשׁ גָּד֔וֹל וּלְבָב֖וֹ עַל־בְּרִ֣ית קֹ֑דֶשׁ וְעָשָׂ֖ה וְשָׁ֥ב לְאַרְצֽוֹ	28		And he will return to his land with great property, and his heart against the covenant of the sanctuary. And he will act and return to his land.	3e	4C	17 8
לַמּוֹעֵ֥ד יָשׁ֖וּב וּבָ֣א בַנֶּ֑גֶב וְלֹֽא־תִהְיֶ֥ה כָרִאשֹׁנָ֖ה וְכָאַחֲרֹנָֽה	29		At an appointed time he will return and he will come against the south, but it will not be as at first or as afterward.	3e	4B	10 14
וּבָ֨אוּ ב֜וֹ צִיִּ֤ים כִּתִּים֙ וְנִכְאָ֔ה וְשָׁ֛ב וְזָעַ֥ם עַל־בְּרִֽית־ק֖וֹדֶשׁ וְעָשָׂ֑ה וְשָׁ֣ב וְיָבֵ֔ן עַל־עֹזְבֵ֖י בְּרִ֥ית קֹֽדֶשׁ	30		For the galleys of Kittim will come against him, and he will be downcast, and will return, and be indignant against the holy covenant, and he will act. And he will return and discern against those who forsake the covenant of the sanctuary.	3d	4C	24 12
וּזְרֹעִ֖ים מִמֶּ֣נּוּ יַעֲמֹ֑דוּ וְחִלְּל֞וּ הַמִּקְדָּ֤שׁ הַמָּעוֹז֙ וְהֵסִ֣ירוּ הַתָּמִ֔יד וְנָתְנ֖וּ הַשִּׁקּ֥וּץ מְשׁוֹמֵֽם	31		And arms from him will stand. And they will profane the sanctuary stronghold, and they will put aside the continual sacrifice, and they will give a detestable thing, causing desolation.	3e	4C	10 25
וּמַרְשִׁיעֵ֣י בְרִ֔ית יַחֲנִ֖יף בַּחֲלַקּ֑וֹת וְעַ֛ם יֹדְעֵ֥י אֱלֹהָ֖יו יַחֲזִ֥קוּ וְעָשֽׂוּ	32		And the wicked of a covenant, he will pollute with flattery, but people knowing their God will be resolute and they will act.	3d	4B	13 14
וּמַשְׂכִּ֣ילֵי עָ֔ם יָבִ֖ינוּ לָֽרַבִּ֑ים וְנִכְשְׁל֞וּ בְּחֶ֧רֶב וּבְלֶהָבָ֛ה בִּשְׁבִ֥י וּבְבִזָּ֖ה יָמִֽים	33		And people with insight will make the many understand. And they will stumble, by the sword, and by flame, by captivity, and be looted for days.	3c	4B	11 18
וּבְהִכָּ֣שְׁלָ֔ם יֵעָזְר֖וּ עֵ֣זֶר מְעָ֑ט וְנִלְו֧וּ עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם רַבִּ֖ים בַּחֲלַקְלַקּֽוֹת	34		But when they stumble they will be helped with a little help. And many will be allied to them with flattery.	3c	4B	11 13
וּמִן־הַמַּשְׂכִּילִ֣ים יִכָּֽשְׁל֗וּ לִצְר֥וֹף בָּהֶ֛ם וּלְבָרֵ֥ר וְלַלְבֵּ֖ן עַד־עֵ֣ת קֵ֑ץ כִּי־ע֖וֹד לַמּוֹעֵֽד	35		And from those who give insight, they will stumble, to refine them, and to purify and to whiten, until the time of the end, for yet again, for an appointed time.	3d	4B	22 5
וְעָשָׂ֨ה כִרְצוֹנ֜וֹ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ וְיִתְרוֹמֵ֤ם וְיִתְגַּדֵּל֙ עַל־כָּל־אֵ֔ל וְעַל֙ אֵ֣ל אֵלִ֔ים יְדַבֵּ֖ר נִפְלָא֑וֹת וְהִצְלִ֙יחַ֙ עַד־כָּ֣לָה זַ֔עַם כִּ֥י נֶחֱרָצָ֖ה נֶעֱשָֽׂתָה	36		And the king will act according to his favour, and will exalt himself, and magnify himself over every God. And over the God of gods, he will speak wonders. And he will prosper till the indignation is finished, for what is decisive is to be done.	3e	4C	31 18
וְעַל־אֱלֹהֵ֤י אֲבֹתָיו֙ לֹ֣א יָבִ֔ין וְעַל־חֶמְדַּ֥ת נָשִׁ֛ים וְעַֽל־כָּל־אֱל֖וֹהַּ לֹ֣א יָבִ֑ין כִּ֥י עַל־כֹּ֖ל יִתְגַּדָּֽל	37		And concerning the God of his ancestors, he will not discern, or concerning the attraction of women, or concerning any God, he will not discern, for over all, he will magnify himself.	3d	4C	26 6

And he will make it govern in the many, and the ground he will divide at a price.	3e	4C	24 16
וּבְעֵ֣ת קֵ֗ץ יִתְנַגַּ֤ח עִמּוֹ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַנֶּ֔גֶב וְיִשְׂתָּעֵ֨ר עָלָ֜יו מֶ֣לֶךְ הַצָּפ֗וֹן בְּרֶ֙כֶב֙ וּבְפָ֣רָשִׁ֔ים וּבָאֳנִיּ֖וֹת רַבּ֑וֹת וּבָ֥א בַאֲרָצ֖וֹת וְשָׁטַ֥ף וְעָבָֽר	40		And at the time of the end, the king of the south will push back with him, and the king of the north will sweep against him, with chariot, and with cavalry, and with many ships, and he will enter into the lands, and will overflow and pass through.	3e	4C	38 12
וּבָא֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ הַצְּבִ֔י וְרַבּ֖וֹת יִכָּשֵׁ֑לוּ וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ יִמָּלְט֣וּ מִיָּד֔וֹ אֱד֣וֹם וּמוֹאָ֔ב וְרֵאשִׁ֖ית בְּנֵ֥י עַמּֽוֹן	41		And he will enter into the land of the estate, and many will stumble, and some will escape from his hand, Edom, and Moab, and the first of the children of Ammon.	3e	4B	14 21
וְיִשְׁלַ֥ח יָד֖וֹ בַּאֲרָצ֑וֹת וְאֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם לֹ֥א תִהְיֶ֖ה לִפְלֵיטָֽה	42		And he will extend his hand in the lands. And the land of Egypt will not be secured.	3e	4B	9 11
וּמָשַׁ֗ל בְּמִכְמַנֵּי֙ הַזָּהָ֣ב וְהַכֶּ֔סֶף וּבְכֹ֖ל חֲמֻד֣וֹת מִצְרָ֑יִם וְלֻבִ֥ים וְכֻשִׁ֖ים בְּמִצְעָדָֽיו	43		And he will govern the stash of the gold and the silver and over all the coveted things of Egypt. And Libya and Cush will among his marchers.	3e	4B	22 10
וּשְׁמֻע֣וֹת יְבַהֲלֻ֔הוּ מִמִּזְרָ֖ח וּמִצָּפ֑וֹן וְיָצָא֙ בְּחֵמָ֣א גְדֹלָ֔ה לְהַשְׁמִ֥יד וּֽלְהַחֲרִ֖ים רַבִּֽים	44		And a report will vex him from the sunrise and from the north, and he will come out with great poison to exterminate and to utterly destroy many.	3e	4B	15 18
וְיִטַּע֙ אָהֳלֶ֣י אַפַּדְנ֔וֹ בֵּ֥ין יַמִּ֖ים לְהַר־צְבִי־קֹ֑דֶשׁ וּבָא֙ עַד־קִצּ֔וֹ וְאֵ֥ין עוֹזֵ֖ר לֽוֹ	45		And he will plant the tents of his pavilion between seas, on the hill of the estate of the sanctuary. And he will come to his end and there is no help for him.	3e	4B	17 10
