Judges 9

Another long chapter. Verse 49 is strongly suggestive of the gender inclusive nature of the word אישׁ. Others have made this point before, but here it is explicit in the language usage itself.

The millstone (a gloss I have used elsewhere for רחים) of verse 53 is רחב rider or chariot.

דַּבְּרוּ־נָ֞א בְּאָזְנֵ֨י כָל־בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶם֮ מַה־טּ֣וֹב לָכֶם֒ הַמְשֹׁ֨ל בָּכֶ֜ם שִׁבְעִ֣ים אִ֗ישׁ כֹּ֚ל בְּנֵ֣י יְרֻבַּ֔עַל אִם־מְשֹׁ֥ל בָּכֶ֖ם אִ֣ישׁ אֶחָ֑ד
וּזְכַרְתֶּ֕ם כִּֽי־עַצְמֵכֶ֥ם וּבְשַׂרְכֶ֖ם אָנִֽי
2 Speak please in the ears of all the superiors of Shechem, How much better for you to be governed by seventy persons, all the children of Jerubbaal, than that one person govern among you?
And remember that your bone and your flesh am I.

וַיְדַבְּר֨וּ אֲחֵֽי־אִמּ֜וֹ עָלָ֗יו בְּאָזְנֵי֙ כָּל־בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה
וַיֵּ֤ט לִבָּם֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ כִּ֥י אָמְר֖וּ אָחִ֥ינוּ הֽוּא
3 And the kin of his mother spoke about him, in the ears of all the superiors of Shechem, all these words.
And their heart bent after Abimelek, for they said, Our kin he is.

וַיִּתְּנוּ־לוֹ֙ שִׁבְעִ֣ים כֶּ֔סֶף מִבֵּ֖יתּ בַ֣עַל בְּרִ֑ית
וַיִּשְׂכֹּ֨ר בָּהֶ֜ם אֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ אֲנָשִׁ֤ים רֵיקִים֙ וּפֹ֣חֲזִ֔ים וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ אַחֲרָֽיו
4 And they gave to him seventy pieces of silver from the house of Baal of a covenant,
and with them Abimelek contracted empty-headed and reckless men, and they went following him.

וַיָּבֹ֤א בֵית־אָבִיו֙ עָפְרָ֔תָה וַֽיַּהֲרֹ֞ג אֶת־אֶחָ֧יו בְּנֵֽי־יְרֻבַּ֛עַל שִׁבְּעִ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ עַל־אֶ֣בֶן אֶחָ֑ת
וַיִּוָּתֵ֞ר יוֹתָ֧ם בֶּן־יְרֻבַּ֛עַל הַקָּטֹ֖ן כִּ֥י נֶחְבָּֽא
5 And he entered the house of his father at Her-Dust, and he slew his kin, the children of Jerubbaal, seventy persons on one stone,
but Jotham child of Jerubbaal, the youngest, was left, for he camouflaged himself.

עִם־אֵל֥וֹן מֻצָּ֖ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר בִּשְׁכֶֽם
6 And all the superiors of Shechem gathered and all the house of Millo, and they went and they made Abimelek to reign as king,
by the oak monument that was in Shechem.

7 And they told Jotham. And he went and stood at the top of the hill of Gerizim, and he lifted up his voice, and he called,
and said to them, Hear me, superiors of Shechem, and may God hear you.

הָל֤וֹךְ הָֽלְכוּ֙ הָעֵצִ֔ים לִמְשֹׁ֥חַ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם מֶ֑לֶךְ
וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ לַזַּ֖יִת מָלְכָ֥ה עָלֵֽינוּ
8 Walking, the trees walked to anoint over them a king,
and they said to the olive tree, Reign over us.

9 And to them said the olive tree, Should I set aside my sleekness, how by me they glorify God and persons,
and go and totter over the trees?

10 And the trees said to the fig tree,

לֵ֥ךְ אַתָּ֖ה מְלָךְ־עָלֵֽינוּ
14 And all the trees said to the brierpatch,
Come. You be king over us.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר הָאָטָד֮ אֶל־הָעֵצִים֒ אִ֡ם בֶּאֱמֶ֣ת אַתֶּם֩ מֹשְׁחִ֨ים אֹתִ֤י לְמֶ֙לֶךְ֙ עֲלֵיכֶ֔ם בֹּ֖אוּ חֲס֣וּ בְצִלִּ֑י
וְאִם־אַ֕יִן תֵּ֤צֵא אֵשׁ֙ מִן־הָ֣אָטָ֔ד וְתֹאכַ֖ל אֶת־אַרְזֵ֥י הַלְּבָנֽוֹן
15 And the brierpatch said to the trees, If in truth you anoint me to be king over you, enter, take refuge in my shadow.
But if there is nothing, let fire go forth from the brierpatch, and devour the cedars of Lebanon.

וְעַתָּ֗ה אִם־בֶּאֱמֶ֤ת וּבְתָמִים֙ עֲשִׂיתֶ֔ם וַתַּמְלִ֖יכוּ אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ
וְאִם־טוֹבָ֤ה עֲשִׂיתֶם֙ עִם־יְרֻבַּ֣עַל וְעִם־בֵּית֔וֹ וְאִם־כִּגְמ֥וּל יָדָ֖יו עֲשִׂ֥יתֶם לֽוֹ
16 So now, if in truth and completeness you have dealt, and have made Abimelek king,
and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and with his house, and if for the recompense of his hands you have dealt him,

וַיַּשְׁלֵ֤ךְ אֶת־נַפְשׁוֹ֙ מִנֶּ֔גֶד וַיַּצֵּ֥ל אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִיַּ֥ד מִדְיָֽן
17 (How my father warred over you,
and he cast his very self in front of, and delivered you from the hand of Midian),

שִׂמְחוּ֙ בַּאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וְיִשְׂמַ֥ח גַּם־ה֖וּא בָּכֶֽם
19 So if in truth and completeness you have dealt with Jerubbaal and with his house this day,
be glad in Abimelek and let him be glad also among you.

וְאִם־אַ֕יִן תֵּ֤צֵא אֵשׁ֙ מֵאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וְתֹאכַ֛ל אֶת־בַּעֲלֵ֥י שְׁכֶ֖ם וְאֶת־בֵּ֣ית מִלּ֑וֹא
וְתֵצֵ֨א אֵ֜שׁ מִבַּעֲלֵ֤י שְׁכֶם֙ וּמִבֵּ֣ית מִלּ֔וֹא וְתֹאכַ֖ל אֶת־אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ
20 But if there is nothing, let fire go forth from Abimelek, and let it devour the superiors of Shechem and the house of Millo,
and let fire go forth from the superiors of Shechem and from the house of Millo, and let it devour Abimelek.

וַיָּ֣נָס יוֹתָ֔ם וַיִּבְרַ֖ח וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ בְּאֵ֑רָה
וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב שָׁ֔ם מִפְּנֵ֖י אֲבִימֶ֥לֶךְ אָחִֽיו
21 And Jotham withdrew and ran away, and went to Beer,
and settled there away from the face of Abimelek, his brother.

וַיָּ֧שַׂר אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שָׁלֹ֥שׁ שָׁנִֽים 22 And Abimelek had influence over Israel three years. 3c 3g 15
וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח אֱלֹהִים֙ ר֣וּחַ רָעָ֔ה בֵּ֣ין אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וּבֵ֖ין בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֑ם
וַיִּבְגְּד֥וּ בַעֲלֵי־שְׁכֶ֖ם בַּאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ
23 And God sent a spirit of evil between Abimelek and the superiors of Shechem,
and the superiors of Shechem acted treacherously with Abimelek,

לָב֕וֹא חֲמַ֖ס שִׁבְעִ֣ים בְּנֵֽי־יְרֻבָּ֑עַל
וְדָמָ֗ם לָשׂ֞וּם עַל־אֲבִימֶ֤לֶךְ אֲחִיהֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָרַ֣ג אוֹתָ֔ם וְעַל֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־חִזְּק֥וּ אֶת־יָדָ֖יו לַהֲרֹ֥ג אֶת־אֶחָֽיו
24 That violence might come for the seventy children of Jerubbaal,
and to set their blood against Abimelek, their kin, that he had slain them, and concerning the superiors of Shechem, who made his hands resolute to slay his kin.

וַיָּשִׂ֣ימוּ לוֹ֩ בַעֲלֵ֨י שְׁכֶ֜ם מְאָרְבִ֗ים עַ֚ל רָאשֵׁ֣י הֶהָרִ֔ים וַיִּגְזְל֗וּ אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲבֹ֥ר עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם בַּדָּ֑רֶךְ
וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לַאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ
25 And for him the superiors of Shechem set ambushes on the tops of the hills, and they robbed all that passed through by them in the way.
And it was told to Abimelek.

וַיָּבֹ֞א גַּ֤עַל בֶּן־עֶ֙בֶד֙ וְאֶחָ֔יו וַיַּעַבְר֖וּ בִּשְׁכֶ֑ם
וַיִּבְטְחוּ־ב֖וֹ בַּעֲלֵ֥י שְׁכֶֽם
26 And Gaal, child of Ebed, came and his kin, and they crossed over into Shechem.
And the superiors of Shechem trusted him.

וַיֵּצְא֨וּ הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה וַֽיִּבְצְר֤וּ אֶת־כַּרְמֵיהֶם֙ וַֽיִּדְרְכ֔וּ וַֽיַּעֲשׂ֖וּ הִלּוּלִ֑ים
וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ בֵּ֣ית אֱ‍ֽלֹֽהֵיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּֽאכְלוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁתּ֔וּ וַֽיְקַלְל֖וּ אֶת־אֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ
27 And they went forth to the field, and gathered grapes from their vineyards, and they trod, and they played the fool,
and they entered the house of their God, and they ate and they imbibed, and they slighted Abimelek.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־עֶ֗בֶד מִֽי־אֲבִימֶ֤לֶךְ וּמִֽי־שְׁכֶם֙ כִּ֣י נַעַבְדֶ֔נּוּ הֲלֹ֥א בֶן־יְרֻבַּ֖עַל וּזְבֻ֣ל פְּקִיד֑וֹ
עִבְד֗וּ אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֤י חֲמוֹר֙ אֲבִ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם וּמַדּ֖וּעַ נַעַבְדֶ֥נּוּ אֲנָֽחְנוּ
28 And Gaal, child of Ebed said, Who is Abimelek and what is Shechem that we should serve him? Is not he a child of Jerubbaal, and Zebul, his officer?
Let them serve the men of Hamor, the father of Shechem. Why then should we serve him ourselves?

וּמִ֨י יִתֵּ֜ן אֶת־הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ בְּיָדִ֔י וְאָסִ֖ירָה אֶת־אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ
וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ לַאֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ רַבֶּ֥ה צְבָאֲךָ֖ וָצֵֽאָה
29 And who will give this people into my hand, and I will put aside Abimelek.
And he said to Abimelek, Increase your host and come out.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֗ע זְבֻל֙ שַׂר־הָעִ֔יר אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֖י גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־עָ֑בֶד
וַיִּ֖חַר אַפּֽוֹ
30 And Zebul the chief of the city heard the words of Gaal, child of Ebed,
and his anger burned.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח מַלְאָכִ֛ים אֶל־אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ בְּתָרְמָ֣ה לֵאמֹ֑ר
הִנֵּה֩ גַ֨עַל בֶּן־עֶ֤בֶד וְאֶחָיו֙ בָּאִ֣ים שְׁכֶ֔מָה וְהִנָּ֛ם צָרִ֥ים אֶת־הָעִ֖יר עָלֶֽיךָ
31 And he sent messengers to Abimelek through deceit, saying,
Behold, Gaal, child of Ebed, and his kin are coming towards Shechem, and behold, they are fortifying the city against you.

וְעַתָּה֙ ק֣וּם לַ֔יְלָה אַתָּ֖ה וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתָּ֑ךְ
וֶאֱרֹ֖ב בַּשָּׂדֶֽה
32 So now, arise by night, you and the people who are with you,
and lie in wait in the field.

וְהָיָ֤ה בַבֹּ֙קֶר֙ כִּזְרֹ֣חַ הַשֶּׁ֔מֶשׁ תַּשְׁכִּ֖ים וּפָשַׁטְתָּ֣ עַל־הָעִ֑יר
וְהִנֵּה־ה֞וּא וְהָעָ֤ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹ֙ יֹצְאִ֣ים אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְעָשִׂ֣יתָ לּ֔וֹ כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר תִּמְצָ֥א יָדֶֽךָ
33 And it will happen in the morning, as the sun is rising, you will rise up early and pillage the city.
And behold, he and the people that are with him will come out to you, and you will do to him as your hand will find out.

וַיָּ֧קָם אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ וְכָל־הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּ֖וֹ לָ֑יְלָה
וַיֶּאֶרְב֣וּ עַל־שְׁכֶ֔ם אַרְבָּעָ֖ה רָאשִֽׁים
34 And Abimelek arose and all the people that were with him by night,
and they lay in wait against Shechem, four gangs.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ גַּ֣עַל בֶּן־עֶ֔בֶד וַיַּעֲמֹ֕ד פֶּ֖תַח שַׁ֣עַר הָעִ֑יר
וַיָּ֧קָם אֲבִימֶ֛לֶךְ וְהָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּ֖וֹ מִן־הַמַּאְרָֽב
35 And Gaal, child of Ebed, came out, and he stood at the door of the gate of the city,
and Abimelek arose, and the people that were with him, from the ambush.

וַיַּרְא־גַּעַל֮ אֶת־הָעָם֒ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־זְבֻ֔ל הִנֵּה־עָ֣ם יוֹרֵ֔ד מֵרָאשֵׁ֖י הֶהָרִ֑ים
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ זְבֻ֔ל אֵ֣ת צֵ֧ל הֶהָרִ֛ים אַתָּ֥ה רֹאֶ֖ה כָּאֲנָשִֽׁים
36 And Gaal saw the people, and said to Zebul, Behold, people are descending from the tops of the hills.
And Zebul said to him, The shadow of the hills you are seeing, as if men.

וַיֹּ֨סֶף ע֣וֹד גַּעַל֮ לְדַבֵּר֒ וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּה־עָם֙ יֽוֹרְדִ֔ים מֵעִ֖ם טַבּ֣וּר הָאָ֑רֶץ
וְרֹאשׁ־אֶחָ֣ד בָּ֔א מִדֶּ֖רֶךְ אֵל֥וֹן מְעוֹנְנִֽים
37 And again further Gaal spoke, and he said, Behold, people are descending from the midpoint of the land,
and the head of another comes from the way of the oak of the fortunetellers.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו זְבֻ֗ל אַיֵּ֨ה אֵפ֥וֹא פִ֙יךָ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תֹּאמַ֔ר מִ֥י אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ כִּ֣י נַעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ
הֲלֹ֨א זֶ֤ה הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָאַ֣סְתָּה בּ֔וֹ צֵא־נָ֥א עַתָּ֖ה וְהִלָּ֥חֶם בּֽוֹ
38 And Zebul said to him, Where is your mouth that said, Who is Abimelek that we should serve him?
Is not this the people that you have refused? Go forth, if you will, now, and fight with him.

וַיֵּ֣צֵא גַ֔עַל לִפְנֵ֖י בַּעֲלֵ֣י שְׁכֶ֑ם
וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בַּאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ
39 And Gaal came out before the superiors of Shechem,
and fought with Abimelek.

וַיִּרְדְּפֵ֣הוּ אֲבִימֶ֔לֶךְ וַיָּ֖נָס מִפָּנָ֑יו
וַֽיִּפְּל֛וּ חֲלָלִ֥ים רַבִּ֖ים עַד־פֶּ֥תַח הַשָּֽׁעַר
40 And Abimelek pursued him and he withdrew before him.
And many fell profaned, even to the door of the gate.

וַיְגָ֧רֶשׁ זְבֻ֛ל אֶת־גַּ֥עַל וְאֶת־אֶחָ֖יו מִשֶּׁ֥בֶת בִּשְׁכֶֽם
41 And Abimelek settled at Arumah.
And Zebul expelled Gaal and his kin from settling in Shechem.

וַֽיְהִי֙ מִֽמָּחֳרָ֔ת וַיֵּצֵ֥א הָעָ֖ם הַשָּׂדֶ֑ה
וַיַּגִּ֖דוּ לַאֲבִימֶֽלֶךְ
42 And it happened afterwards that the people came out into the field.
And they told Abimelek.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־הָעָ֗ם וַֽיֶּחֱצֵם֙ לִשְׁלֹשָׁ֣ה רָאשִׁ֔ים וַיֶּאֱרֹ֖ב בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה
וַיַּ֗רְא וְהִנֵּ֤ה הָעָם֙ יֹצֵ֣א מִן־הָעִ֔יר וַיָּ֥קָם עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם וַיַּכֵּֽם
43 And he took the people and he distributed them into three gangs, and they lay in wait in the field.
And he saw and behold, the people went out from the city, and he arose against them and struck them.
3e 4C 22
21
וַאֲבִימֶ֗לֶךְ וְהָרָאשִׁים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֔וֹ פָּשְׁט֕וּ וַיַּ֣עַמְד֔וּ פֶּ֖תַח שַׁ֣עַר הָעִ֑יר
וּשְׁנֵ֣י הָֽרָאשִׁ֗ים פָּֽשְׁט֛וּ עַֽל־כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֖ה וַיַּכּֽוּם
44 And Abimelek and the gangs that were with him pillaged. And they stood at the door of the gate of the city.
And the two gangs pillaged over all that were in the field, and they struck them.

וַאֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ נִלְחָ֣ם בָּעִ֗יר כֹּ֚ל הַיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא וַיִּלְכֹּד֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר וְאֶת־הָעָ֥ם אֲשֶׁר־בָּ֖הּ הָרָ֑ג
וַיִּתֹּץ֙ אֶת־הָעִ֔יר וַיִּזְרָעֶ֖הָ מֶֽלַח
45 And Abimelek warred with the city all that day, and he conquered the city, and the people that were in it, he slew.
And he broke down the city and sowed it with salt.
3e 4C 29
13
וַֽיִּשְׁמְע֔וּ כָּֽל־בַּעֲלֵ֖י מִֽגְדַּל־שְׁכֶ֑ם
וַיָּבֹ֣אוּ אֶל־צְרִ֔יחַ בֵּ֖ית אֵ֥ל בְּרִֽית
46 And all the superiors of the tower of Shechem heard,
and they came to the rookery of the house of a covenant God.

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לַאֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ
כִּ֣י הִֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ כָּֽל־בַּעֲלֵ֖י מִֽגְדַּל־שְׁכֶֽם
47 And it was told to Abimelek,
that all the superiors of the tower of Shechem had collected themselves.

וַיַּ֨עַל אֲבִימֶ֜לֶךְ הַר־צַלְמ֗וֹן הוּא֮ וְכָל־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־אִתּוֹ֒ וַיִּקַּח֩ אֲבִימֶ֨לֶךְ אֶת־הַקַּרְדֻּמּ֜וֹת בְּיָד֗וֹ וַיִּכְרֹת֙ שׂוֹכַ֣ת עֵצִ֔ים וַיִּ֨שָּׂאֶ֔הָ וַיָּ֖שֶׂם עַל־שִׁכְמ֑וֹ
וַיֹּ֜אמֶר אֶל־הָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּ֗וֹ מָ֤ה רְאִיתֶם֙ עָשִׂ֔יתִי מַהֲר֖וּ עֲשׂ֥וּ כָמֽוֹנִי
48 And Abimelek went up the hill of Salmon, he and all the people that were with him. And Abimelek took a wedge into his hand and cut from the entwining trees, and he lifted it up and put it on his backside.
And he said to the people that were with him, Did you see what I have done? Be swift and do as I have.
3e 4C 52
25
וַיִּכְרְת֨וּ גַם־כָּל־הָעָ֜ם אִ֣ישׁ שׂוֹכֹ֗ה וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ אַחֲרֵ֤י אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ וַיָּשִׂ֣ימוּ עַֽל־הַצְּרִ֔יחַ וַיַּצִּ֧יתוּ עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם אֶֽת־הַצְּרִ֖יחַ בָּאֵ֑שׁ
וַיָּמֻ֜תוּ גַּ֣ם כָּל־אַנְשֵׁ֧י מִֽגְדַּל־שְׁכֶ֛ם כְּאֶ֖לֶף אִ֥ישׁ וְאִשָּֽׁה
49 And all the people cut also, each an entwined branch, and they went after Abimelek to put it in the rookery. and they charred them in the rookery with fire.
And they died, even all the persons of the tower of Shechem, about a thousand, man and woman.
3c 4C 42
19
וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אֲבִימֶ֖לֶךְ אֶל־תֵּבֵ֑ץ
וַיִּ֥חַן בְּתֵבֵ֖ץ וַֽיִּלְכְּדָֽהּ
50 And Abimelek went to Tebets,
and encamped against Tebets and conquered it.
3e 4A 10

וּמִגְדַּל־עֹז֮ הָיָ֣ה בְתוֹךְ־הָעִיר֒ וַיָּנֻ֨סוּ שָׁ֜מָּה כָּל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֣ים וְהַנָּשִׁ֗ים וְכֹל֙ בַּעֲלֵ֣י הָעִ֔יר וַֽיִּסְגְּר֖וּ בַּעֲדָ֑ם
וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ עַל־גַּ֥ג הַמִּגְדָּֽל
51 And a strong tower was in the midst of the city, and there all the men and the women withdrew and all the superiors of the city, and they locked it behind them,
and they came up onto the roof of the tower.
3e 4B 39

וַיָּבֹ֤א אֲבִימֶ֙לֶךְ֙ עַד־הַמִּגְדָּ֔ל וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בּ֑וֹ
וַיִּגַּ֛שׁ עַד־פֶּ֥תַח הַמִּגְדָּ֖ל לְשָׂרְפ֥וֹ בָאֵֽשׁ
52 And Abimelek came even to the tower and fought against it.
And he made overture even to the door of the tower, to incinerate it with fire.

וַתַּשְׁלֵ֞ךְ אִשָּׁ֥ה אַחַ֛ת פֶּ֥לַח רֶ֖כֶב עַל־רֹ֣אשׁ אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ
וַתָּ֖רִץ אֶת־גֻּלְגָּלְתּֽוֹ
53 And one woman cast a slice of a rider-stone on the head of Abimelek,
and damaged his skull.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א מְהֵרָ֜ה אֶל־הַנַּ֣עַר ׀ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֗יו וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ שְׁלֹ֤ף חַרְבְּךָ֙ וּמ֣וֹתְתֵ֔נִי פֶּן־יֹ֥אמְרוּ לִ֖י אִשָּׁ֣ה הֲרָגָ֑תְהוּ
וַיִּדְקְרֵ֥הוּ נַעֲר֖וֹ וַיָּמֹֽת
54 And he called swiftly to the lad, his cargo bearer, saying to him, Draw your sword and put me to death, lest they say of me, A woman slew him.
And his lad thrust him through and he died.
3e 4C 37
11
וַיִּרְא֥וּ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כִּ֣י מֵ֣ת אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ
וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ
55 And the men of Israel saw that Abimelek was dead,
and they went each to his place.
3e 4B 13
7
וַיָּ֣שֶׁב אֱלֹהִ֔ים אֵ֖ת רָעַ֣ת אֲבִימֶ֑לֶךְ
אֲשֶׁ֤ר עָשָׂה֙ לְאָבִ֔יו לַהֲרֹ֖ג אֶת־שִׁבְעִ֥ים אֶחָֽיו
56 And God returned the evil of Abimelek,
that he had done to his father, to slay his seventy brothers.
3e 4C 13
15
וְאֵ֗ת כָּל־רָעַת֙ אַנְשֵׁ֣י שְׁכֶ֔ם הֵשִׁ֥יב אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּרֹאשָׁ֑ם
וַתָּבֹ֣א אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם קִֽלֲלַ֖ת יוֹתָ֥ם בֶּן־יְרֻבָּֽעַל
57 And all the evil of the men of Shechem, God returned on their heads.
And the slight of Jotham child of Jerubbaal came to them.
