Daniel 4

As usual, Daniel is difficult. The note in JB on the 'watchers' (עירין, עיר) indicates that the term is common in apocryphal works: Enoch, Jubilees, Testament of the 12 Patriarchs. Be that as it may, those works are outside the scope of this puzzle. The two cases above reduce to the stem עור. We see this stem 3 times in the chapter. That is the information I have at the moment, so that is how the puzzle pieces are currently placed. A related word, ער, also reduces to this stem (yod and vav appear and disappear in word forms for many reasons). Already I have rejected the gloss enemy for this word in the Hebrew of Psalms 139:20 where I resolved the word to עיר city and 1 Samuel 28:16 where I chose blindness. I have left Daniel's words a little stilted to reflect his vexation.

Sofit - the end of - would be so much simpler! I have already used the ends of for two separate stems אסף and קצץ. What's one more! But I will leave conclusion here for now - slightly more mysterious as befits a dream.

Daniel does not use exactly the same key words as the king in the description of the dream. There is a long set of keywords. The image is a bird's eye perspective of the recurrence pattern in verses 11-15 compared with 20-22. My selection excludes several words to make the parallel lines stand out. Interesting to note that the stem מלך, king, kingdom, etc is used 262 times in this short book. At 4.4% of its words, It is second only to Esther (8.2% of its words) in density of use of this stem. Is all life just a big game of who's the king of the castle? But the greatest and the most powerful is water, for it seeks the lowest place (Tao). The king, we monarchs, only find excellence in a humility that cannot be assumed by pretense. Out of the dream comes reality, already anticipated with foreboding. He apparently did not have the power to do the right thing without the adjudication.

You can see I have had a tough time combing out the tangles in the domain of Judgment, among others. The full potential for untangling will be apparent when I write some of the potential correction and checking algorithms, if that proves possible from my data. There are lots of people who have worked on this problem of analysis and consistency. Perhaps it is too large a problem. I don't know yet. It could be that I need more information on historical trends in the language and other cognates, but if I tried this, I think I would never finish.

אֲנָ֣ה נְבוּכַדְנֶצַּ֗ר שְׁלֵ֤ה הֲוֵית֙ בְּבֵיתִ֔י וְרַעְנַ֖ן בְּהֵיכְלִֽי 1 I, Nebuchadnezzar, at ease I was in my house, and luxuriant in my palace. 3e 4C 20

וְהַרְהֹרִין֙ עַֽל־מִשְׁכְּבִ֔י וְחֶזְוֵ֥י רֵאשִׁ֖י יְבַהֲלֻנַּֽנִי
2 f A dream I perceived, and it perturbed me.
And the forewarnings on my lying down, and the visions of my head vexed me.

16 Then Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, was puzzled about one hour, and his thoughts vexed him.
The king answered and said, Belteshazzar, do not let the dream and the key vex you. Belteshazzar answered and said, My lord, the dream, for those who hate you. And its key, for those arousing you.
