Deuteronomy 21 | Fn | Min | Max | Syll
כִּי־יִמָּצֵ֣א חָלָ֗ל בָּאֲדָמָה֙ אֲשֶׁר֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ נֹתֵ֤ן לְךָ֙ לְרִשְׁתָּ֔הּ נֹפֵ֖ל בַּשָּׂדֶ֑ה לֹ֥א נוֹדַ֖ע מִ֥י הִכָּֽהוּ | 1 | If there is found one who is profaned in the ground that Yahweh your God is giving to you to possess, having fallen in the field, (it is not known who struck him), | 3e | 4C | 29 7
וְיָצְא֥וּ זְקֵנֶ֖יךָ וְשֹׁפְטֶ֑יךָ וּמָדְדוּ֙ אֶל־הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר סְבִיבֹ֥ת הֶחָלָֽל | 2 | Then your elders and your judges will go forth, and they measure to the cities that surround the profaned. | 3e | 4B | 11 15
וְהָיָ֣ה הָעִ֔יר הַקְּרֹבָ֖ה אֶל־הֶחָלָ֑ל וְלָֽקְח֡וּ זִקְנֵי֩ הָעִ֨יר הַהִ֜וא עֶגְלַ֣ת בָּקָ֗ר אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־עֻבַּד֙ בָּ֔הּ אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־מָשְׁכָ֖ה בְּעֹֽל | 3 | And it will be the city nearest to the profaned. And the elders of that city will take a calf of the herd, that has not been in service, that has not been drawn in a shackle, | 3e | 4C | 12 25
וְהוֹרִ֡דוּ זִקְנֵי֩ הָעִ֨יר הַהִ֤וא אֶת־הָֽעֶגְלָה֙ אֶל־נַ֣חַל אֵיתָ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹא־יֵעָבֵ֥ד בּ֖וֹ וְלֹ֣א יִזָּרֵ֑עַ וְעָֽרְפוּ־שָׁ֥ם אֶת־הָעֶגְלָ֖ה בַּנָּֽחַל | 4 | And the elders of that city will take the calf down to a perennial wadi, which has not been in service and has not been sown, and will break the nape there of the calf in the wadi. | 3d | 4C | 31 11
וְנִגְּשׁ֣וּ הַכֹּהֲנִים֮ בְּנֵ֣י לֵוִי֒ כִּ֣י בָ֗ם בָּחַ֞ר יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֙יךָ֙ לְשָׁ֣רְת֔וֹ וּלְבָרֵ֖ךְ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה וְעַל־פִּיהֶ֥ם יִהְיֶ֖ה כָּל־רִ֥יב וְכָל־נָֽגַע | 5 | And the priests, the children of Levi, will come close, (for them Yahweh your God has chosen to minister to him and to bless in the name of Yahweh). And by their mandate all contention and all contagion will happen. | 3e | 4C | 31 12
וְכֹ֗ל זִקְנֵי֙ הָעִ֣יר הַהִ֔וא הַקְּרֹבִ֖ים אֶל־הֶחָלָ֑ל יִרְחֲצוּ֙ אֶת־יְדֵיהֶ֔ם עַל־הָעֶגְלָ֖ה הָעֲרוּפָ֥ה בַנָּֽחַל | 6 | And all the elders of that city nearest to the profaned, will wash their hands over the calf beheaded in the wadi. | 3e | 4B | 15 18
וְעָנ֖וּ וְאָמְר֑וּ יָדֵ֗ינוּ לֹ֤א שָֽׁפְכוּ֙ אֶת־הַדָּ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה וְעֵינֵ֖ינוּ לֹ֥א רָאֽוּ | 7 | And they will answer. And they will say, Our hands have not shed this blood, and our eyes have not seen. | 3e | 4C | 6 18
כַּפֵּר֩ לְעַמְּךָ֨ יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֲשֶׁר־פָּדִ֙יתָ֙ יְהוָ֔ה וְאַל־תִּתֵּן֙ דָּ֣ם נָקִ֔י בְּקֶ֖רֶב עַמְּךָ֣ יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְנִכַּפֵּ֥ר לָהֶ֖ם הַדָּֽם | 8 | Cover your people, Israel, which you have ransomed, Yahweh. And do not assign innocent blood within your people, Israel. And the blood will be a cover-price for them. | 3e | 4C | 30 8
וְאַתָּ֗ה תְּבַעֵ֛ר הַדָּ֥ם הַנָּקִ֖י מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ כִּֽי־תַעֲשֶׂ֥ה הַיָּשָׁ֖ר בְּעֵינֵ֥י יְהוָֽה | 9 | So you, you will shrive the innocent blood from within you, for you will do what is upright in the eyes of Yahweh. | 3d | 4A | 15 11
כִּֽי־תֵצֵ֥א לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עַל־אֹיְבֶ֑יךָ וּנְתָנ֞וֹ יְהוָ֧ה אֱלֹהֶ֛יךָ בְּיָדֶ֖ךָ וְשָׁבִ֥יתָ שִׁבְיֽוֹ | 10 | When you go out to war against your enemies, and Yahweh your God gives it into your hand, and you carry it away captive, | 3c | 4A | 10 19
וְרָאִיתָ֙ בַּשִּׁבְיָ֔ה אֵ֖שֶׁת יְפַת־תֹּ֑אַר וְחָשַׁקְתָּ֣ בָ֔הּ וְלָקַחְתָּ֥ לְךָ֖ לְאִשָּֽׁה | 11 | And you see among the captives, a woman, beautiful, handsome, and you are attached to her and would take for yourself as wife, | 3e | 4B | 13 14
וַהֲבֵאתָ֖הּ אֶל־תּ֣וֹךְ בֵּיתֶ֑ךָ וְגִלְּחָה֙ אֶת־רֹאשָׁ֔הּ וְעָשְׂתָ֖ה אֶת־צִפָּרְנֶֽיהָ | 12 | Then you will bring her into the centre of your house, and she will shave her head, and she will do her nails. | 3e | 4B | 9 14
וְהֵסִ֩ירָה֩ אֶת־שִׂמְלַ֨ת שִׁבְיָ֜הּ מֵעָלֶ֗יהָ וְיָֽשְׁבָה֙ בְּבֵיתֶ֔ךָ וּבָֽכְתָ֛ה אֶת־אָבִ֥יהָ וְאֶת־אִמָּ֖הּ יֶ֣רַח יָמִ֑ים וְאַ֨חַר כֵּ֜ן תָּב֤וֹא אֵלֶ֙יהָ֙ וּבְעַלְתָּ֔הּ וְהָיְתָ֥ה לְךָ֖ לְאִשָּֽׁה | 13 | And she will put aside the habit of her captivity from over her, and she will inhabit in your house, and weep for her father and her mother a moon's days, and after, you will come to her and be her husband, and she will be for you as wife. | 3d | 4C | 35 20
וְהָיָ֞ה אִם־לֹ֧א חָפַ֣צְתָּ בָּ֗הּ וְשִׁלַּחְתָּהּ֙ לְנַפְשָׁ֔הּ וּמָכֹ֥ר לֹא־תִמְכְּרֶ֖נָּה בַּכָּ֑סֶף לֹא־תִתְעַמֵּ֣ר בָּ֔הּ תַּ֖חַת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עִנִּיתָֽהּ | 14 | But it will happen if you do not delight in her that you will set her loose in her own integrity, and you will not sell her for silver. You will not make merchandise of her in that you have afflicted her. | 3c | 4B | 27 12
כִּֽי־תִהְיֶ֨יןָ לְאִ֜ישׁ שְׁתֵּ֣י נָשִׁ֗ים הָאַחַ֤ת אֲהוּבָה֙ וְהָאַחַ֣ת שְׂנוּאָ֔ה וְיָֽלְדוּ־ל֣וֹ בָנִ֔ים הָאֲהוּבָ֖ה וְהַשְּׂנוּאָ֑ה וְהָיָ֛ה הַבֵּ֥ן הַבְּכ֖וֹר לַשְּׂנִיאָֽה | 15 | If there is for a man two wives, the one loved and the other hated, and they have given children birth for him, the loved and the hated, and the firstborn son is of the hated, | 3d | 4C | 36 10
וְהָיָ֗ה בְּיוֹם֙ הַנְחִיל֣וֹ אֶת־בָּנָ֔יו אֵ֥ת אֲשֶׁר־יִהְיֶ֖ה ל֑וֹ לֹ֣א יוּכַ֗ל לְבַכֵּר֙ אֶת־בֶּן־הָ֣אֲהוּבָ֔ה עַל־פְּנֵ֥י בֶן־הַשְּׂנוּאָ֖ה הַבְּכֹֽר | 16 | Then it will be in the day when he makes his children inherit what is his, he is not able to make firstborn the child of the loved, before the child of the hated, the firstborn. | 3e | 4B | 17 21
כִּי֩ אֶת־הַבְּכֹ֨ר בֶּן־הַשְּׂנוּאָ֜ה יַכִּ֗יר לָ֤תֶת לוֹ֙ פִּ֣י שְׁנַ֔יִם בְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־יִמָּצֵ֖א ל֑וֹ כִּי־הוּא֙ רֵאשִׁ֣ית אֹנ֔וֹ ל֖וֹ מִשְׁפַּ֥ט הַבְּכֹרָֽה | 17 | But the firstborn child of the hated, he will recognize, by giving him a twofold proportion in all that he finds is his, for he is the beginning of his virility. For him is the judgment of the birthright. | 3e | 4C | 24 11
כִּֽי־יִהְיֶ֣ה לְאִ֗ישׁ בֵּ֚ן סוֹרֵ֣ר וּמוֹרֶ֔ה אֵינֶ֣נּוּ שֹׁמֵ֔עַ בְּק֥וֹל אָבִ֖יו וּבְק֣וֹל אִמּ֑וֹ וְיסְּר֣וּ אֹת֔וֹ וְלֹ֥א יִשְׁמַ֖ע אֲלֵיהֶֽם | 18 | If there is for anyone a rebellious and provocative child. It is not in it to hear with the voice of its father or with the voice of its mother, and they have chastened it, and it will not hear them, | 3e | 4C | 25 11
וְתָ֥פְשׂוּ ב֖וֹ אָבִ֣יו וְאִמּ֑וֹ וְהוֹצִ֧יאוּ אֹת֛וֹ אֶל־זִקְנֵ֥י עִיר֖וֹ וְאֶל־שַׁ֥עַר מְקֹמֽוֹ | 19 | Then its father and its mother will take it up, and bring it forth to the elders of its city and at the gate of its place, | 3c | 4B | 9 18
וְאָמְר֞וּ אֶל־זִקְנֵ֣י עִיר֗וֹ בְּנֵ֤נוּ זֶה֙ סוֹרֵ֣ר וּמֹרֶ֔ה אֵינֶ֥נּוּ שֹׁמֵ֖עַ בְּקֹלֵ֑נוּ זוֹלֵ֖ל וְסֹבֵֽא | 20 | And they will say to the elders of its city, this our child is rebellious and provocative. It is not in it to hear with our voice. A glutton and besotted. | 3e | 4C | 27 5
וּ֠רְגָמֻהוּ כָּל־אַנְשֵׁ֨י עִיר֤וֹ בָֽאֲבָנִים֙ וָמֵ֔ת וּבִֽעַרְתָּ֥ הָרָ֖ע מִקִּרְבֶּ֑ךָ וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִשְׁמְע֥וּ וְיִרָֽאוּ | 21 | ~ | And all persons of its city will pelt him with stones and it will die, and you will shrive the evil from within you. And all Israel will hear and fear. | 3e | 4C | 25 12 |
וְכִֽי־יִהְיֶ֣ה בְאִ֗ישׁ חֵ֛טְא מִשְׁפַּט־מָ֖וֶת וְהוּמָ֑ת וְתָלִ֥יתָ אֹת֖וֹ עַל־עֵֽץ | 22 | And when there is against a person, a sin of judgment of death, and it is put to death, and you hang it on a tree, | 3d | 4B | 14 8
לֹא־תָלִ֨ין נִבְלָת֜וֹ עַל־הָעֵ֗ץ כִּֽי־קָב֤וֹר תִּקְבְּרֶ֙נּוּ֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא כִּֽי־קִלְלַ֥ת אֱלֹהִ֖ים תָּל֑וּי וְלֹ֤א תְטַמֵּא֙ אֶת־אַדְמָ֣תְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ נַחֲלָֽה | 23 | Its corpse will not bide on the tree, but you will entomb it in that day, for one who is hung is slighted of God, and you will not defile your ground that Yahweh your God is giving to you as inheritance. | 3e | 4C | 26 24 |

Deuteronomy 21
Those who think that the law never changes should consider verse 13 and decide if, say, the Americas should also behave this way, perhaps as some tribes still do, thinking themselves righteous and respectful of women. Our supreme courts have decided otherwise. Let us hope that the conservatives do not move us in a retrograde step towards what is known as a greater evil from which we had already been delivered. The natural cost of desire is addressed in this passage. The implied instruction - let us stay away from rigid and unchangeable notions of law - is that the problem cannot be fully addressed yet since the male is not ready for the lesson.
