2 Kings 9

Gird your loins is such a classic phrase from the 16th century. But I have already used gird, girdle, etc for אזר and the stem in this chapter is חגר. I think I would have noticed if it wasn't working. (Sometimes attire is a bit odd to say. Sounds too much like a motorcar)

אזר girdle (15) gird (13) girt (2) gird up (1) self-gird (1)
חגר attire (21) wear (16) sash (5) wore (3)

Anyway - gird up your loins - which has metaphoric applications, seems to be simply, get dressed. Was that one among the children of the prophets in his pajamas? It seems the lad was well prepared for his task and carried it out. The prophet seems to have an administrative structure around him, a curia, a municipality in the kingdom, with political power.

It is the nature of this (my) reading of the Hebrew that I keep the stems separate that I can separate, especially the ones that are rarely used. I have compromised my concordance at times for various reasons: a few times for language games, English or Hebrew, and with some very common words, come, go, enter, bring, I have been as flexible as required to make the English readable. But for rare words, like the strong bone of the stairs (verse 13), I leave the stark awkward metaphor in Hebrew for the English reader to figure out. My rules are roughly these (note the single and double less than and greater than signs):
  • One Hebrew stem <-> one English stem, wherever possible
  • One Hebrew stem <->> many English stems, where required for readability and nuance
  • Many Hebrew stems <<-> one English stem, never (except for grammatical connectors, prepositions, conjunctions, etc where usage is varied)
  • Many Hebrew stems <<->> many English stems, for very common words such as noted above.
All the exceptions are in a database by Hebrew and English stem so I am reasonably certain I have not failed abysmally in applying my rules.

I have not come across a reading of the Hebrew that uses these rigid rules. As I have frequently pointed out, the KJV is free with many to many relationships in significant nouns and verbs. They use punish for instance for a half-dozen unrelated stems. Similarly for many other glosses. There is no need for this. If we are afraid of God visiting us (פקד), then we are afraid. We should be glad of another death. Such a visitation is always ultimately for life.

Another note. I try to make my reading as transparent as possible. I suppose I am lucky to have limited focus, because this is a large puzzle. But being transparent, if I am wrong, I hope I am clearly wrong, and that such an error raises good questions as to how languages actually work. Language of course has been made to work in oppressive and manipulative ways. I hope this is not my result. I would rather undermine such a result.

In verse 15 we see the use of נפשׁ (again) as mind in KJV and in JB and NIV "if this is how you feel." This just shows the many imaginative ways in which that elusive word is rendered. I am very surprised to see NIV = JB.

The horror is personalized here. There wasn't much left to attire in a tomb. There are some spelling issues with the names Joram, Jehoram. They seem to be the same person in this chapter.
