Judges 15

The pun here is in two words. חמר is both ass and homer, a measure. לחי is both jawbone (cheek) and the name of the town. Remember that the Philistines are governors or we could read parables as we have sometimes done. (For their government seems far from formal.) So could we read a parable here?

A judge who does personal tit for tat is a childish model for good judgment. It contrasts with Aram noted in the Elisha cycle where good treatment of prisoners of war gave some relief from constant incursions.

Judges 15 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it was from the days in the days of the wheat harvest, and Sampson visited his wife with a young kid of the she-goats, and he said, I will go in to my wife, the inner room.
But her father would not permit him to come in.

10
2 And her father said, I figured that you hated her, so I gave her to your friend.
Is not her younger sister better than she? Let her be yours, if you will, instead of her.

20
3 And Sampson said to them, I will be acquitted this one time from the Philistines,
though I do them a disservice.

8
4 And Sampson went and caught three hundred foxes.
And he took torches, and faced tail to tail, and set one torch between two tails, in the midst.

5 And he kindled fire in the torches, and he sent into the risen corn of the Philistines,
and kindled a rich heap, both to the risen corn and to vineyard [and] olive.

16
6 And the Philistines said,Who has done this? And they said, Sampson, the son-in-law of the Timnite, for he took his wife and gave her to his friend.
And the Philistines came up and they cremated her and her father with fire.

20
7 And Sampson said to them, Though you have done such as this,
without fail, I will be avenged among you, and after I will refrain.
3d 4C 13
12
8 And he struck them leg over thigh, a great striking.
And he went down and he settled in the apex of the cliff of Eitam.
3d 4B 13
12
9 And the Philistines came up and encamped in Judah,
and let out their tendrils in the Jawbone.
3e 4B 14
7
10 And the men of Judah said, Why have you come up to us?
And they said, To bind Sampson we have come up, to do to him as he has done to us.
3e 4C 15
23
11 And three thousand men came down from Judah to the apex of the cliff of Eitam. And they said to Sampson, Do you not know that the Philistines are governors among us. So what is this that you have done to us?
And he said to them, As they have done to me, so I have done to them.
3e 4C 47
17
12 And they said to him, To bind you we have come down, to give you into the hand of the Philistines.
And Sampson said to them, Swear to me, lest you intervene against me yourselves.
3e 4C 19
18
13 And they said to him, saying, No. For to bind, to bind you and to give you into their hand. But to die? You will not die.
And they bound him with two new cords and brought him up from the cliff.

22
14 He came to Jawbone, and the Philistines were jubilant to encounter him.
And the spirit of Yahweh thrived on him and the cords that were on his arms were like flax that was kindled with fire, and his bonds melted from his hands.
3e 4B 15
45
15 And he found a fresh jawbone of an ass.
And he extended his hand and took it. And he struck with it a thousand men.
3e 4C 9
16
16 And Sampson said, With the jawbone of an ass, homer of homers.
With the jawbone of the ass I struck a thousand men.
3e 4B 17
11
17 And it happened as he finished speaking, that he cast the jawbone from his hand.
And he called that place, the high ground of Jawbone.
3d 4B 17
12
18 And he was very thirsty and he called to Yahweh, and he said, You yourself have given, by the hand of your servant, this great victory,
but now I will die from thirst, and fall into the hand of the fore-skinned.
3e 4C 33
18
19 And God split the deep hollow that was in Jawbone, and water came forth from it, and he imbibed, and his spirit returned, and he lived.
Therefore he called its name, the spring of the one calling, that is in Jawbone to this day.

20 And he judged Israel, in the days of the Philistines, twenty years. 3c 3g 16
