Numbers 32

These holdings are noted in several Psalms, 62, 108, 135, 136. That country must have had a reputation for the Psalmists to write of it.

Woof is a rare word. I did not want to give it multiple glosses.

וְהִנֵּ֣ה קַמְתֶּ֗ם תַּ֚חַת אֲבֹ֣תֵיכֶ֔ם תַּרְבּ֖וּת אֲנָשִׁ֣ים חַטָּאִ֑ים לִסְפּ֣וֹת ע֗וֹד עַ֛ל חֲר֥וֹן אַף־יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	14		And behold, you have arisen instead of your ancestors, an increase of sinful persons, to add further to the burning of the anger of Yahweh to Israel.	3d	4C	19 13
כִּ֤י תְשׁוּבֻן֙ מֵֽאַחֲרָ֔יו וְיָסַ֣ף ע֔וֹד לְהַנִּיח֖וֹ בַּמִּדְבָּ֑ר וְשִֽׁחַתֶּ֖ם לְכָל־הָעָ֥ם הַזֶּֽה	15	C	For you turn from following him, and he will yet again leave them in the wilderness, and you will destroy all this people.	3e	4C	19 10

וַאֲנַ֜חְנוּ נֵחָלֵ֣ץ חֻשִׁ֗ים לִפְנֵי֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר אִם־הֲבִֽיאֹנֻ֖ם אֶל־מְקוֹמָ֑ם וְיָשַׁ֤ב טַפֵּ֙נוּ֙ בְּעָרֵ֣י הַמִּבְצָ֔ר מִפְּנֵ֖י יֹשְׁבֵ֥י הָאָֽרֶץ	17		And we, ready-armed, will hurry before the children of Israel, until without fail we have brought them to their place, and our little ones will settle in the enclosed cities, before the inhabitants of the land.	3d	4C	28 19
לֹ֥א נָשׁ֖וּב אֶל־בָּתֵּ֑ינוּ עַ֗ד הִתְנַחֵל֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אִ֖ישׁ נַחֲלָתֽוֹ	18	f	We will not return to our houses, until each of the children of Israel has inherited its inheritance.	3e	4B	7 14
כִּ֣י לֹ֤א נִנְחַל֙ אִתָּ֔ם מֵעֵ֥בֶר לַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן וָהָ֑לְאָה כִּ֣י בָ֤אָה נַחֲלָתֵ֙נוּ֙ אֵלֵ֔ינוּ מֵעֵ֥בֶר הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן מִזְרָֽחָה	19	B	For we will not inherit with them across the Jordan and yonder, for our inheritance has come for us across the Jordan toward the sunrise.	3e	4C	15 20
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶם֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה אִֽם־תַּעֲשׂ֖וּן אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה אִם־תֵּחָֽלְצ֛וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לַמִּלְחָמָֽה	20		And Moses to them said, If you will do this thing, if you will be ready-armed before Yahweh to war,	3d	4C	18 12
וְעָבַ֨ר לָכֶ֧ם כָּל־חָל֛וּץ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֖ן לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה עַ֧ד הוֹרִישׁ֛וֹ אֶת־אֹיְבָ֖יו מִפָּנָֽיו	21		And will all pass through the Jordan for yourselves, ready-armed, before Yahweh, until he has dispossessed his enemies before his face,	3c	4B	16 10
וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֨ה הָאָ֜רֶץ לִפְנֵ֤י יְהוָה֙ וְאַחַ֣ר תָּשֻׁ֔בוּ וִהְיִיתֶ֧ם נְקִיִּ֛ים מֵיְהוָ֖ה וּמִיִּשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְ֠הָיְתָה הָאָ֨רֶץ הַזֹּ֥את לָכֶ֛ם לַאֲחֻזָּ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה	22		And the land is controlled in the presence of Yahweh, and after you will return, then you will be innocent from Yahweh and from Israel, and this land will be for you to hold fast before Yahweh.	3c	4C	31 18
וְאִם־לֹ֤א תַעֲשׂוּן֙ כֵּ֔ן הִנֵּ֥ה חֲטָאתֶ֖ם לַיהוָ֑ה וּדְעוּ֙ חַטַּאתְכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּמְצָ֖א אֶתְכֶֽם	23		But if you will not do so, behold you will have sinned against Yahweh. Now set down this, your sins will find out you.	3e	4C	14 11
בְּנֽוּ־לָכֶ֤ם עָרִים֙ לְטַפְּכֶ֔ם וּגְדֵרֹ֖ת לְצֹנַאֲכֶ֑ם וְהַיֹּצֵ֥א מִפִּיכֶ֖ם תַּעֲשֽׂוּ	24		Build for yourselves cities for your little ones, and fences for your flock, and do what goes out from your mouth.	3e	4C	16 10
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר בְּנֵי־גָד֙ וּבְנֵ֣י רְאוּבֵ֔ן אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר עֲבָדֶ֣יךָ יַעֲשׂ֔וּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲדֹנִ֖י מְצַוֶּֽה	25		And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben said to Moses, saying, Your servants will do as my lord has commanded.	3e	4C	16 16
טַפֵּ֣נוּ נָשֵׁ֔ינוּ מִקְנֵ֖נוּ וְכָל־בְּהֶמְתֵּ֑נוּ יִֽהְיוּ־שָׁ֖ם בְּעָרֵ֥י הַגִּלְעָֽד	26		Our little ones, our wives, our acquisitions, and all our cattle, will be there in the cities of the Gilead.	3e	4B	15 9
וַעֲבָדֶ֨יךָ יַֽעַבְר֜וּ כָּל־חֲל֥וּץ צָבָ֛א לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֲדֹנִ֖י דֹּבֵֽר	27		And your servants will cross, all ready-armed as a host before Yahweh to war, as my lord has spoken.	3d	4A	21 8
וַיְצַ֤ו לָהֶם֙ מֹשֶׁ֔ה אֵ֚ת אֶלְעָזָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְאֵ֖ת יְהוֹשֻׁ֣עַ בִּן־נ֑וּן וְאֶת־רָאשֵׁ֛י אֲב֥וֹת הַמַּטּ֖וֹת לִבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל	28		And for them, Moses commanded Eleazar the priest and Joshua child of Nun, and the heads of the parents of the branches of the children of Israel.	3d	4C	21 14
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֲלֵהֶ֗ם אִם־יַעַבְר֣וּ בְנֵי־גָ֣ד וּבְנֵי־רְאוּבֵ֣ן ׀ אִ֠תְּכֶם אֶֽת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֞ן כָּל־חָל֤וּץ לַמִּלְחָמָה֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֔ה וְנִכְבְּשָׁ֥ה הָאָ֖רֶץ לִפְנֵיכֶ֑ם וּנְתַתֶּ֥ם לָהֶ֛ם אֶת־אֶ֥רֶץ הַגִּלְעָ֖ד לַאֲחֻזָּֽה	29		And Moses said to them, If the children of Gad and the children of Reuben will cross with you the Jordan, all ready-armed for war before Yahweh, and the land is controlled in your presence, then you will give to them the land of the Gilead to hold fast.	3d	4C	47 15
וְאִם־לֹ֧א יַֽעַבְר֛וּ חֲלוּצִ֖ים אִתְּכֶ֑ם וְנֹֽאחֲז֥וּ בְתֹכְכֶ֖ם בְּאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן	30		And if they will not cross ready-armed with you, then they will have holdings among you in the land of Canaan.	3c	4A	11 13
וַיַּֽעֲנ֧וּ בְנֵי־גָ֛ד וּבְנֵ֥י רְאוּבֵ֖ן לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֧ר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל־עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ כֵּ֥ן נַעֲשֶֽׂה	31		And the children of Gad and the children of Reuben answered, saying, As Yahweh has spoken to your servants, so we will do.	3c	4A	14 16
נַ֣חְנוּ נַעֲבֹ֧ר חֲלוּצִ֛ים לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וְאִתָּ֙נוּ֙ אֲחֻזַּ֣ת נַחֲלָתֵ֔נוּ מֵעֵ֖בֶר לַיַּרְדֵּֽן	32	B	We ourselves will cross ready-armed before Yahweh into the land of Canaan, but our holdings, we will inherit from beyond the Jordan.	3c	4B	17 18

וְאֶת־נְב֞וֹ וְאֶת־בַּ֧עַל מְע֛וֹן מֽוּסַבֹּ֥ת שֵׁ֖ם וְאֶת־שִׂבְמָ֑ה וַיִּקְרְא֣וּ בְשֵׁמֹ֔ת אֶת־שְׁמ֥וֹת הֶעָרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּנֽוּ	38		And Nebo and Baal Meon, (name turned round), and Sibmah, and they called (by names), the names of the cities where they built.	3c	4B	18 17
וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ בְּנֵ֨י מָכִ֧יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁ֛ה גִּלְעָ֖דָה וַֽיִּלְכְּדֻ֑הָ וַיּ֖וֹרֶשׁ אֶת־הָאֱמֹרִ֥י אֲשֶׁר־בָּֽהּ	39		And the children of Makir, child of Manasseh went to Gilead and conquered it, and dispossessed the Amorite that was in it.	3c	4A	19 11
וַיִּתֵּ֤ן מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶת־הַגִּלְעָ֔ד לְמָכִ֖יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁ֑ה וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בָּֽהּ	40		And Moses gave the Gilead to Makir child of Manasseh, and he settled in it.	3e	4C	16 4
וְיָאִ֤יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁה֙ הָלַ֔ךְ וַיִּלְכֹּ֖ד אֶת־חַוֺּתֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶתְהֶ֖ן חַוֺּ֥ת יָאִֽיר	41		And Jair, child of Manasseh, went and he conquered their municipalities, and he called them, the municipality of Jair.	3e	4C	17 9
וְנֹ֣בַח הָלַ֔ךְ וַיִּלְכֹּ֥ד אֶת־קְנָ֖ת וְאֶת־בְּנֹתֶ֑יהָ וַיִּקְרָ֧א לָ֦ה נֹ֖בַח בִּשְׁמֽוֹ	42		And Woof went and he conquered Qenah and its built-up areas, and he called it Woof in his name.	3c	4B	17 8

Verse 38 is tricky to read, but the following verses are I think examples of what it signifies. I am reminded of Psalm 49: As far as they are concerned, their houses are forever, their dwellings from generation to generation. // They call their dust-bowls by their names.

Anyway, Reuben and God get the cattle country. The analogue of not crossing Jordan puzzles me.
