Judges 20

Dreadful description ahead. And more to come, even from some of our heroes. Note the description of left handed as hampered in the right hand. (Note here from Jim Davila on the subject.) In the same verse this is the first time I have used miss for חטא which is otherwise glossed as sin.

אישׁ is used in the singular here referring to a company of men. All the instances are singular. This results in all the associated pronouns, stand-alone or enclitic, all singular, but glossed as plural in the English.

Not sure what to do with an idiomatic phrase כפעם בפעם, as pulse in pulse? So far I have rendered the stem as anvil, time, pulse, footfall, bell, beaten down. Clearly this is the third of three engagements as with the calling of Samuel, and probably means something like as at the prior occasions. It occurs 6 times in all: Numbers once, Judges 3 times, 1 Samuel twice. I am going to be inconsistent here. 1 Samuel 3 has a sense of the pulse of intimacy. This has the sense of the pulse in the anvil. A kind of inevitable foolishness.

The battle was glorious. That's what it says. And they did not know that evil touched them. This also is part of the sledgehammer that Israel is on behalf of all of us. It is not a matter of election, or privilege, or merit. It is a matter of example. Example of what not to do, how not to behave. Now the somewhat petty decisions that are attributed to Yahweh in these chapters of the primal history can be put in place against the latter prophets. One does not believe horror for the sake of horror.

Today (now yesterday) I read a post by Rabbi Lawrence Hoffman, a writer I have deep respect for. I will repeat my response here because it is so critical to hear a difficult conversation.

"relatively little conversation occurs on why we still deserve this age-old relationship with God"

a very important conversation. I have been reading - slowly - I have 143 chapters to go out of the 929. A little more than Torah. The issue, I submit, is not merit, nor deserve. The issue is example. And the example is frequently a bad one, but it is common to all humanity. You were chosen as example. And I am thankful. You are a good example, a real sledgehammer in the hand of G-d. (I hope my reading of Jeremiah 51 is not totally out to lunch). Right now I am reading Judges 20 and desperate to put the words of Hashem into some perspective against the later prophet. There on the third occasion of the pulse of the anvil, כפעם בפעם a pulse that should be tender as in 1 Samuel 3, we are told that the battle was glorious כבד. But they did not know that evil touched them. וְהֵם֙ לֹ֣א יָדְע֔וּ כִּֽי־נֹגַ֥עַת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם הָרָעָֽה 

There is a real motivation for love here, and for purity, and for goodness, not out of merit, but out of a depth of gift that is very easy to miss. It is curious that also in this chapter, I see my first instance of חטא translated as miss rather than a gloss related to sin. It is for the left-handed stone-slingers. We hope not to miss when we read Scripture. Whether translated or not.  

It is true that נשא can mean show partiality. But its dominant gloss is to lift up, bear, forbear. Here in Numbers 6:26, the lifting up of פנה face, presence, could indeed imply partiality. Not out of prejudice or injustice, but out of necessity, we should have peace with our kin. Putting this against Judges 20 raises many issues for today. 

This is, I submit, the core of the law vs grace problem. In this story, the madness that should be redirected against ones own sin is taken out on both kin and friend. This is not an example to be followed.

וַיִּשְׁאֲל֥וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּֽיהוָ֑ה וְשָׁ֗ם אֲרוֹן֙ בְּרִ֣ית הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים בַּיָּמִ֖ים הָהֵֽם	27		And the children of Israel asked Yahweh, (for there was the ark of the covenant of God in those days,	3e	4B	11 15
וּ֠פִינְחָס בֶּן־אֶלְעָזָ֨ר בֶּֽן־אַהֲרֹ֜ן עֹמֵ֣ד ׀ לְפָנָ֗יו בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵם֮ לֵאמֹר֒ הַאוֹסִ֨ף ע֜וֹד לָצֵ֧את לַמִּלְחָמָ֛ה עִם־בְּנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֥ן אָחִ֖י אִם־אֶחְדָּ֑ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ עֲל֔וּ כִּ֥י מָחָ֖ר אֶתְּנֶ֥נּוּ בְיָדֶֽךָ	28	~	and Phineas child of Eleazar child of Aaron stood before it in those days), saying, Will I again further go forth to fight with the children of Benjamin my brother, or should I refrain? And Yahweh said, Go up, for tomorrow I will give him into your hand.	3c	4C	44 17
וַיָּ֤שֶׂם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֹֽרְבִ֔ים אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה סָבִֽיב	29		And Israel set up ambushes for Gibeah round about.	3e	4C	14
וַיַּעֲל֧וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־בְּנֵ֥י בִנְיָמִ֖ן בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י וַיַּעַרְכ֥וּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֖ה כְּפַ֥עַם בְּפָֽעַם	30		And the children of Israel came up to the children of Benjamin on the third day, and arranged themselves against Gibeah as the pulse in the anvil.	3c	4B	20 14
וַיֵּצְא֤וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִן֙ לִקְרַ֣את הָעָ֔ם הָנְתְּק֖וּ מִן־הָעִ֑יר וַיָּחֵ֡לּוּ לְהַכּוֹת֩ מֵהָעָ֨ם חֲלָלִ֜ים כְּפַ֣עַם ׀ בְּפַ֗עַם בַּֽמְסִלּוֹת֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר אַחַ֜ת עֹלָ֣ה בֵֽית־אֵ֗ל וְאַחַ֤ת גִּבְעָ֙תָה֙ בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה כִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים אִ֖ישׁ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל	31		And the children of Benjamin went forth to encounter the people. And they were detached from the city, and they started to strike the people, profaning as the pulse in the anvil, in the highways, of which one goes up to Bethel and one toward Gibeah in the field, about thirty men in Israel.	3e	4C	18 47

וַיִּרְא֥וּ בְנֵֽי־בִנְיָמִ֖ן כִּ֣י נִגָּ֑פוּ וַיִּתְּנ֨וּ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל מָקוֹם֙ לְבִנְיָמִ֔ן כִּ֤י בָֽטְחוּ֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֹרֵ֔ב אֲשֶׁר שָׂ֖מוּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָֽה	36		And the children of Benjamin saw that they were plagued. And the men of Israel gave place for Benjamin, for they trusted to the ambush that they had set against Gibeah.	3e	4C	12 28
וְהָאֹרֵ֣ב הֵחִ֔ישׁוּ וַֽיִּפְשְׁט֖וּ אֶל־הַגִּבְעָ֑ה וַיִּמְשֹׁךְ֙ הָאֹרֵ֔ב וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־כָּל־הָעִ֖יר לְפִי־חָֽרֶב	37		And those in ambush hurried and pillaged Gibeah, and those in ambush drew out, and struck all the city with the edge of the sword.	3e	4B	15 15
וְהַמּוֹעֵ֗ד הָיָ֛ה לְאִ֥ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עִם־הָאֹרֵ֑ב הֶ֕רֶב לְהַעֲלוֹתָ֛ם מַשְׂאַ֥ת הֶעָשָׁ֖ן מִן־הָעִֽיר	38		And the engagement was for the men of Israel with the ambush, that they should make ascend an abundant lifting up of smoke from the city.	3d	4A	15 15
וַיַּהֲפֹ֥ךְ אִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וּבִנְיָמִ֡ן הֵחֵל֩ לְהַכּ֨וֹת חֲלָלִ֤ים בְּאִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּשְׁלֹשִׁ֣ים אִ֔ישׁ כִּ֣י אָמְר֔וּ אַךְ֩ נִגּ֨וֹף נִגָּ֥ף הוּא֙ לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ כַּמִּלְחָמָ֖ה הָרִאשֹׁנָֽה	39		And the men of Israel changed in the battle, and Benjamin started to strike and profane against the men of Israel, about thirty persons, for they said, Surely they will be plagued before us as in the first battle.	3e	4C	12 42
וְהַמַּשְׂאֵ֗ת הֵחֵ֛לָּה לַעֲל֥וֹת מִן־הָעִ֖יר עַמּ֣וּד עָשָׁ֑ן וַיִּ֤פֶן בִּנְיָמִן֙ אַחֲרָ֔יו וְהִנֵּ֛ה עָלָ֥ה כְלִיל־הָעִ֖יר הַשָּׁמָֽיְמָה	40		And when the lifting up started to ascend from the city, the pillar of smoke, Benjamin faced behind himself, and behold a whole offering ascended from the city towards the heavens.	3d	4C	17 22
וְאִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הָפַ֔ךְ וַיִּבָּהֵ֖ל אִ֣ישׁ בִּנְיָמִ֑ן כִּ֣י רָאָ֔ה כִּֽי־נָגְעָ֥ה עָלָ֖יו הָרָעָֽה	41		And the men of Israel changed and the men of Benjamin were vexed, for they saw that evil had touched them.	3e	4C	15 11
וַיִּפְנ֞וּ לִפְנֵ֨י אִ֤ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־דֶּ֣רֶךְ הַמִּדְבָּ֔ר וְהַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה הִדְבִּיקָ֑תְהוּ וַאֲשֶׁר֙ מֵהֶ֣עָרִ֔ים מַשְׁחִיתִ֥ים אוֹת֖וֹ בְּתוֹכֽוֹ	42		And they faced about before the men of Israel to the way of the wilderness, and the battle followed them closely. And those from the cities, they destroyed in their midst.	3e	4C	24 15
כִּתְּר֤וּ אֶת־בִּנְיָמִן֙ הִרְדִיפֻ֔הוּ מְנוּחָ֖ה הִדְרִיכֻ֑הוּ עַ֛ד נֹ֥כַח הַגִּבְעָ֖ה מִמִּזְרַח־שָֽׁמֶשׁ	43		They encircled Benjamin. They pursued them as if at rest. They trod them, until opposite Gibeah from the rising of the sun.	3d	4C	17 11
וַֽיִּפְּלוּ֙ מִבִּנְיָמִ֔ן שְׁמֹנָֽה־עָשָׂ֥ר אֶ֖לֶף אִ֑ישׁ אֶת־כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה אַנְשֵׁי־חָֽיִל	44		And Benjamin fell, eighteen thousand men. All these persons of ability.	3e	4A	15 7
וַיִּפְנ֞וּ וַיָּנֻ֤סוּ הַמִּדְבָּ֙רָה֙ אֶל־סֶ֣לַע הָֽרִמּ֔וֹן וַיְעֹֽלְלֻ֙הוּ֙ בַּֽמְסִלּ֔וֹת חֲמֵ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִ֖ים אִ֑ישׁ וַיַּדְבִּ֤יקוּ אַחֲרָיו֙ עַד־גִּדְעֹ֔ם וַיַּכּ֥וּ מִמֶּ֖נּוּ אַלְפַּ֥יִם אִֽישׁ	45		And they faced about and withdrew towards the wilderness, to the cliff of the pomegranate [Rimmon], and they shackled in the highways, five thousand men, and followed closely after them until Gidom [Chopped Down] and they struck from them two thousand men.	3e	4C	31 19
וַיְהִי֩ כָל־הַנֹּ֨פְלִ֜ים מִבִּנְיָמִ֗ן עֶשְׂרִים֩ וַחֲמִשָּׁ֨ה אֶ֥לֶף אִ֛ישׁ שֹׁ֥לֵֽף חֶ֖רֶב בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא אֶֽת־כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה אַנְשֵׁי־חָֽיִל	46		And all the fallen from Benjamin were twenty five thousand men that drew a sword in that day. All these persons of ability.	3d	4B	27 7
וַיִּפְנ֞וּ וַיָּנֻ֤סוּ הַמִּדְבָּ֙רָה֙ אֶל־סֶ֣לַע הָֽרִמּ֔וֹן שֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אִ֑ישׁ וַיֵּֽשְׁבוּ֙ בְּסֶ֣לַע רִמּ֔וֹן אַרְבָּעָ֖ה חֳדָשִֽׁים	47		And six hundred men faced about and withdrew towards the wilderness to the cliff of Rimmon, and they settled at the cliff of Rimmon four months.	3e	4C	21 14
וְאִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל שָׁ֣בוּ אֶל־בְּנֵ֤י בִנְיָמִן֙ וַיַּכּ֣וּם לְפִי־חֶ֔רֶב מֵעִ֤יר מְתֹם֙ עַד־בְּהֵמָ֔ה עַ֖ד כָּל־הַנִּמְצָ֑א גַּ֛ם כָּל־הֶעָרִ֥ים הַנִּמְצָא֖וֹת שִׁלְּח֥וּ בָאֵֽשׁ	48		And the men of Israel returned to the children of Benjamin, and they struck them with the edge of the sword from the city, complete, to beast, to everyone who was found. Furthermore, all the cities that were found, they dismissed in fire.	3d	4C	32 13
