Genesis 42

Verse 6, obscured by the desire for functional meaning, has a Eucharistic element in it in the analogue of Egypt as the world. Just thinking of the word שׁבר glossed as follows: shatter (41), broken (41), break (36), broke (16), brokenness (12), procure (6), breaker (5), crushed corn (6), peddle (4), break open (1), buying food (1), rake (1), rift (1), shatter (1), slake (1), wreck (1). I even wonder if I should allow procure, peddle but there does seem to be a need in the domain of buying and selling.

Three different words are used for sack in the KJV, It is odd to find such oversimplification so close together. JB distinguishes sack, pannier and corn-sack. I have already used pannier twice, once qualified with woven and once on its own. There are four different stems for containers used in this chapter: כלי vessel (181) inner pouch(5), מתח satchel (2), שׂק sack (4), צרר bag (3) bags (1).

Verse 34, I have no verb that will do well for סחר. As noun, I have used wares, vendors. The sense is of both buying and selling. They came to buy, Joseph invites them to sell also. Obviously trade works but I have already used trade and business elsewhere for different stems. Traffic KJV is attractive but today it has the sense of illegal trade. And this is not a verb with a direct object. So I have chosen a composite buy and sell.

Genesis 42 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Jacob saw that there was crushed corn in Egypt,
and Jacob said to his children, Why are you looking at one another?
3e 4C 13
14
2 And he said, Behold, I have heard that there is crushed corn in Egypt.
Go down there and procure for us from there, that we may live and not die.
3e 4B 16
16
3 And the ten brothers of Joseph went down,
to procure corn from Egypt.
3e 4A 9
7
4 But Benjamin the brother of Joseph, Jacob did not send with his brothers,
for he said, Lest harm encounter him.
3e 4B 17
10
5 And the children of Israel went to procure in the midst of others who came,
for the famine was in the land of Canaan.
3e 4B 15
11
6 And Joseph, he was one who has authority over the land. He was the crushed corn for all the people of the land.
And the brothers of Joseph entered and prostrated themselves to him, nostrils earthward.
3e 4C 21
16
7 And Joseph saw his brothers and recognized them,
but made himself alien to them, and spoke with them hard, and he said to them, Where have you come from? And they said, From the land of Canaan to procure food.
3c 4C 11
37
8 So Joseph recognized his brothers,
but they did not recognize him.

9 And Joseph remembered the dreams that he had dreamed of them,
and he said to them, You are spies. To see the nakedness of the land, you have come.

10 And they said him, No, my lord,
but your servants have come to procure food.

11 All of us, children of one man, we are.
We are reliable. Your servants are not spies.
3e 4B 10
14
12 And he said to them,
No, but the nakedness of the land, you have come to see.
3e 4A 6
11
13 And they said, Your servants are twelve brothers, we are children of one man in the land of Canaan,
and behold the youngest is with our father today, and another is not.
3c 4C 27
19
14 And Joseph said to them,
This is what I spoke to you, saying, You are spies.

Pharaoh lives. You will not go out from this except you bring your youngest brother here.

16 Send one of you, and let him take your brother, and you will be in bondage, that your words may be tested if there is truth with you,
and if not, Pharaoh lives, for you are spies.

12
17 And he gathered them into detention three days. 3d 3g 14

18 And Joseph said to them, On the third day, do this and live.
I am one who fears God.
3e 4C 18

but yourselves, go, bring crushed corn for the famine of your households.

16

And they did so.

21 And they said each to his brother, Lamentably guilty we are concerning our brother, that we saw the anguish of his being when he made supplication to us, and we did not hear.
Therefore this trouble has come to us.

22 And Reuben answered them, saying, Did I not say to you, saying, Do not sin against the boy. And you did not hear.
So also his blood here is searched out.

8

for there was a translator between them.

7
24 And he turned round from them and wept.
And he returned to them and spoke to them, and took from them Simeon, and bound him in their sight.
3e 4C 10
31

25 And Joseph commanded to fill their vessels with corn and to return the silver of each to his sack, and to give them provender for the journey.
And he did for them, indeed.

6

27 And the one opened his sack to give silage to his ass at the stop over,
and he saw his money, and behold, it was in the mouth of his satchel.
3d 4A 20
14

28 And he said to his brothers, My silver has been returned and moreover, behold, in my satchel.
And their heart was brought out, and they were apprehensive, each to his brothers, saying, What is this that God has done to us?
3d 4C 18
24

29 And they went to Jacob their father, toward the land of Canaan,
and they made clear to him all that had befallen them, saying,
3d 4B 15
14
