1 Samuel 22

I had often wondered about Doeg. One can see him wanting to be on side with his very self-centred boss. We all know about self-centred bosses. There are a lot of problems with human governance and poor Saul was not a good example, nor was his hit-man. But we have his history as a lesson or two for ourselves. Interesting to remember that David is of Moabite ancestry. Perhaps, of Jesse was a slight.

A curious note, שאול can be read three ways, Saul, Sheol, and to inquire, two of them in verse 13.

This is the 777th chapter that I have read in Hebrew and writ in English.

1 Samuel 22 Fn Min Max Syll
1 So David went on from there and escaped to the cave of Adullam,
And when his brothers and all the house of his father heard, they descended upon him there.

2 And they collected themselves to him, everyone in distress, and all who had a claim, and everyone discontented, and he became over them the chief.
And there were with him about four hundred persons.
3e 4C 31
11
3 So David went on from there to Mizpeh of Moab,
and he said to the king of Moab, Let, if you will, my father and my mother come forth with you, until I know what God will do for me.
3c 4C 11
31
4 And he guided them before the king of Moab,
and they settled with him all the days that David was being hunted.
3e 4B 10
15
5 And Gad the prophet said to David, you will not settle while you are being hunted. Go and enter for yourself the land of Judah.
So David went and he came to the forest of Xareth.
3e 4C 27
12
6 And Saul heard that David's whereabouts were known, and the men that were with him.
And Saul was sitting on the hillock under the tamarisk in Ramah, and his spear was in his hand, and all his servants stood firm over him.
3e 4C 18
33
7 And Saul said to his servants standing firm by him, Hear, if you will, Benjaminites.
Even to all of you will the child of Jesse give fields and vineyards, set all of you as chiefs of thousands, and chiefs of hundreds?
3e 4C 22
29
8 For you have colluded, all of you, against me. And there is none who has disclosed to my ear that my child is in league with the son of Jesse, and there is none in turmoil from you concerning me, or who has disclosed to my ear,
that my child has raised up my servants against me, to lie in wait as on this day?

17
9 And Doeg the Edomite answered (and he was monitor over the servants of Saul) and he said,
I have seen the son of Jesse entering towards Nob to Ahimelech, child of Achitov.
3d 4B 20
19
10 And he inquired for himself in Yahweh, and victuals he gave him,
and the sword of Goliath the Philistine, he gave him.
3d 4B 12
12
11 And the king sent to call Ahimelech, child of Achitov, the priest, and all the house of his father, the priests that were at Nob,
and they came, all of them, to the king.
3d 4B 34
9
12 And Saul said, Hear if you will, child of Achitov.
And he said, Here am I, my lord.
3e 4B 12
8
13 And Saul said to him, Why have you colluded against me, you and the child of Jesse,
in that you have given him bread and sword, and have inquired for him in God, to arise against me to lie in wait as on this day?
3d 4C 20
27
14 And Ahimelech answered the king, and he said,
And who, in all your servants, is as faithful as David, and the son-in-law of the king, and who turns aside when he hears of you, and is glorious in your house?
3c 4C 14
34
15 Today, did I start to inquire for him in God? Far be it from me.
Let not the king suggest in his servant such a thing, or in all the house of my father. For your servant does not know any word of this, lesser or greater.
3c 4C 16
32
16 And the king said, To die you will die, Ahimelech,
you and all the house of your father.
3e 4B 13
8
17 And the king said to the footmen, those standing firm by him, Surround and put to death the priests of Yahweh, for their hands also are with David, and because they knew that he had run away and did not disclose it to my ear.
But the servants of the king did not consent to extend their hands to intervene with the priests of Yahweh.
3e 4C 48
23
18 And the king said to Doeg, You surround and intervene among the priests.
And Doeg the Edomite surrounded and he intervened among the priests, and he put to death on that day, eighty five persons bearing a linen ephod.
3e 4C 18
37
19 And Nob, the city of the priests, he struck with the edge of the sword, from man and to woman, from infant to nursling,
and bull and ass and lamb, with the edge of the sword.
3c 4C 26
10
20 And one child of Ahimelech child of Achitov escaped, and his name was Abiatar,
and he ran away after David.
3e 4B 21
8
21 And Abiatar made clear to David,
that Saul had slain the priests of Yahweh.
3e 4C 9
11
22 And David said to Abiatar, I knew in that day that Doeg the Edomite was there, that he would tell Saul.
I am surrounded by all the integrity of the house of your father.
3e 4C 31
14
23 Settle with me. Do not fear. For he that seeks me seeks you.
But in watching, you are with me.
