Genesis 45

Verses 6 and 7, for פלט everywhere, glosses related to secure have been adequate. נצל is deliver for me. Both JB and KJV get the word save in here as a helping verb for חיה, live. JB gets in the word race. Such a suggestion is completely out of context culturally and scientifically. Is it in the land or in the earth? The word occurs in each verse. Does it change its sense? No. What Israel has is security in the land of Egypt.

In the narrative time, there is nothing anticipated in the text about ultimate salvation or deliverance. In the analogue of the story, something that can be 'read in' everywhere within the Bible, the 'chosen', the 'firstborn', has security in the world - for a purpose, as Joseph notes here. We can imagine our relationship to God throughout the arch of the Biblical story. The people are in the world, Egypt, and all the good of the land is theirs. They become enslaved there eventually, but at this point in the story, they are secure. Then they are in the wilderness, in the promised land, in exile, and restored.

We can also see analogues in many different individual stories, not least this story of Joseph and his metaphorical descent and rising, from the pit to become the father to Pharaoh.

Verse 17, בער, most frequently kindle or perhaps the archaic shrive, occasionally brute, is here kine. Strange how it is similar to kindle even in English. My domain of animal is full of beasts of burden. There aren't enough names to go around for them all, so some archaisms are needed.

טען lade is a hapax. The stem occurs twice in the Bible, Isaiah 14:19 and here and is considered distinct in both cases. The more common usage of lade today is in its past participle laden. (You can test this in the Google Ngram viewer.)

My choices of glosses for clothing have led me to select shawl here. KJV has change of raiment, but I have been careless and raiment was used up early. JB has festal garment. My renewed is from the frame of book four of the Psalms. Is this just a change of clothes?

1 And Joseph could not repress himself for all those standing firm by him, and he called, Have every man go out from me.
And no one stood with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers.

2 And he gave his voice to weeping,
and Egypt heard and the house of Pharaoh heard.

3 And Joseph said to his brothers, I am Joseph. Is yet my father living?
And his brothers were not able to answer him, for they were vexed in his presence.

4 And Joseph said to his brothers, Come close, if you will, to me. And they came close.
And he said, I am Joseph, your brother, whom you sold toward Egypt.

5 So now do not be tortured nor let yourself burn in your eyes, that you sold me here,
because for life, God sent me before you.

and to revive you with great security.

8 So now, not you it was, who sent me here, but God.
And he has set me as a father to Pharaoh, and as a lord to all his house, and governor in all the land of Egypt.

and Benjamin wept on his neck.

16 And the voice was heard in the house of Pharaoh, saying, The brothers of Joseph have come.
And it was good in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants.
3e 4C 16
14

17 And Pharaoh said to Joseph, Say to your brothers, Do this.
Lade your kine, and go, and come toward the land of Canaan.

18 And take your father and your households and come to me,
and I will give to you the good of the land of Egypt, and you will eat the choicest of the land.

19 And you are commanded. Do this.
Take for yourselves from the land of Egypt, wagons for your little ones and for your wives, and you will bear your father, and come.
3e 4B 9
28
20 And your eyes do not spare concerning your cargo,
for the good of all the land of Egypt, yours it is.
3d 4B 10
10
21 And the children of Israel did so. And Joseph gave them wagons by the mandate of Pharaoh,
and he gave them provender for the journey.
3d 4B 24
10
22 For all of them he gave to each a renewed shawl,
and to Benjamin he gave three hundred of silver, and five renewed shawls.
3d 4C 13
21

23 And to his father he sent such as this, ten asses bearing from the good of Egypt,
and ten she-donkeys bearing corn and bread and necessities for his father for the journey.
3c 4C 20
21
24 So he sent his brothers and they went.
And he said to them, Do not shudder on the journey.
3e 4B 10
13
25 And they went up from Egypt.
And they came to the land of Canaan, to Jacob their father.
3e 4B 8
15
26 And they told him, saying, Joseph is yet living. And that he is governor in all the land of Egypt.
And his heart was numb, for he did not believe them.
3e 4C 22
11
27 And they spoke to him all the words of Joseph that he had spoken to them, and he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to bear him,
and the spirit of Jacob their father revived.
3e 4C 35
10
28 And Israel said, Abundance. Joseph my son is yet living.
I will go and see him before I die.
