2 Kings 7

When one is setting an aria for a story, repeating a key phrase is something a composer will do. Does this rather than source criticism account for some of the narrative pressing home of the point in this story?

Imagine a reprise sung by the man of God and the equerry (and thanks to JB for this unique office word.)
opening statement of the MoG
v 1   e B z-q,g# ^A B B rev,C qad,e B rev,c d g# f e
The recitative after the atnah continues on the dominant and sub mediant, warning notes.
Equ - his opening
v 2   e B paz,tal,pas,ger,B zar,seg,B rev,C qad,z-q,g# B ^A (Mog) rev,C qad,z-q,g# f e

Mog - his closing recitative is on the rest note, the subdominant, I told you so. Note also the reversal of the phrases creating a circular structure.
v 18 e rev,qad,B z-q,g# ^A pas,ger,rev,e qad,qad,z-q,qad,B z-q,g# e
Equ - his reprise is the same shape with differing ornaments.
v 19 e pas,ger,B zar,seg,B rev,C qad,z-q,g# B                ^A (Mog) rev,C qad,z-q,g# f e

It could be sung that way.

The recurrence structure just looking at the 21 words used two or three times excluding verses 3 to 15 is really clear.
Recurrence pattern of words used two or three times in 2 Kings 7:1,2,16-20
I don't give you many notes, but you can reconstruct my questions and choices by reading the Hebrew and seeing what I have done - whether for good or ill - to the English.

2 Kings 7 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And Elisha said, Hear the word of Yahweh.
Thus says Yahweh, As at this time tomorrow, a bushel of fine flour for a shekel, and two bushels of barley for a shekel, at the gate of Samaria.

2 And the equerry on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and he said, Behold, Yahweh making slits in the heavens. Would this word be?
And he said, You behold. See with your eyes, but from there you will not eat.

3 And four leprous persons there were at the door of the gate,
and they said each to his friend, Why are we sitting here until we die?
3c 4B 18
18

4 If we say, We will enter the city and the famine is in the city then we will die there, and if we sit here then we will die,
so now come, and let us fall to the army of Aram. If they let us live, we will live, and if they put us to death, then we will die.

5 And they arose in the twilight to come to the army of Aram,
and they came to the extremity of the army of Aram and behold, there was no one there.

17

6 For the Lord had made the army of Aram hear the rumbling of chariot, the rumbling of horse, the rumbling of a great force.
And they said each to its kin, Behold, the king of Israel has hired against us the kings of the Hittites, and the kings of Egypt to come against us.
3c 4B 22
36
7 And they arose and withdrew in the twilight. And they forsook their tents and their horses and their asses, the camp as it was,
and they withdrew by themselves.
3e 4B 39
7
8 And these lepers came to the extremity of the camp, and they came into one tent, and they ate and they imbibed, and they bore from there silver and gold and garments, and they went and they buried,
and they returned and they came to another tent to bear from there, and they went and they buried.

9 And they said, each to his friend, We are not doing rightly this day. It is a day of good news, and we are becalmed. If we tarry until the light of the morning, iniquity will find us.
So now, come and we will go and tell the house of the king.

10 And they came, and they called out to the gate of the city, and they made clear to them, saying, We came to the camp of Aram, and behold there is no one there nor human voice,
but the horse is bound, and the ass is bound, and tents are as they were.

21
11 And he called the gatekeepers,
and they told the house of the king, facing it.

11

12 And the king arose by night, and he said to his servants, I will tell you now what Aram has done to us.
They know that we are hungry, and they went forth from the camp to shroud themselves in the field, saying, When they come out from the city, we will arrest them alive, and into the city we will go.

13 And one from his servants answered and said, Let someone now take five from the horses, the residue that are still here in it. (Behold, as all the tumult of Israel that are still here in it. Behold, as all the tumult of Israel who are completed.)
So let us send and we will see.

14 And they took two chariot horses.
And the king sent after the army of Aram, saying, Go and see.

15 And they went after them to the Jordan, and behold the way was full of their garments, and vessels that Aram had flung away in their haste.
And the messengers returned and they told the king.
3e 4C 37
15
16 And the people came forth and despoiled the camp of Aram.
And it was, a bushel of fine flour for a shekel, and two bushels of barley for a shekel, according to the word of Yahweh.
3c 4B 15
22
17 And the king entrusted the equerry whose hand he leaned on, to be over the gate, and the people trampled him at the gate and he died,
as the man of God had spoken, who spoke when the king came down to him.
3c 4C 34
22

18 And it happened as the man of God had spoken to the king, saying,
Two bushels of barley for a shekel, and a bushel of fine flour for a shekel, it will be as at this time tomorrow at the gate of Samaria.
3e 4B 16
26

19 And the equerry the man of God answered, and he said, And behold Yahweh making slits in the heavens. Would there be a word like this?
And he said, Behold, you will see with your eyes, but from there, you will not eat.

17

20 And so it was for him.
And the people trampled him at the gate, and he died.
