Genesis 48

Jacobs comment in verse 8, Who are these? almost reads like the beginning of a sacramental service.

The speaker of verses 1 and 2 is not identified. Verse 22, Shechem, the town where Jacob bought a field and where Joseph would be buried. KJV portion, is pure guessing. NIV, ridge of land, also is trying to make sense of information we don't have on an armed conquest of Shechem. JB seems to make some sense of it so I have followed their lead in not translating the word, but treating it as a name, with Jacob partitioning the land in advance. Perhaps the author knew more than Jacob (Israel) could at the time within the story.

Generally speaking, the Hebrew of Genesis is less baffling than Isaiah and less contorted than the last three chapters of Leviticus that I am working through (but not scheduling all at once).

Genesis 48 Fn Min Max Syll
1 And it was after things these that he said to Joseph, Behold your father is ill.
And he took two of his children with him, Manasseh and Ephraim.

19
2 And he told Jacob and said, Behold, your child Joseph has come to you.
And Israel resolved himself and sat on the couch.

3 And Jacob said to Joseph, The One, the Sufficient appeared to me in Luz, in the land of Canaan,
and blessed me.

4 And said to me, Note me well, making you fruitful, and I will increase you and I will give you a congregation of peoples.
And I will give this land to your seed after you to hold fast forever.

5 So now, your two sons, those born to you in the land of Egypt, until I came to you toward Egypt, they are mine.
Ephraim and Manasseh, as Reuben and Simeon, they will be for me.

From the name of their brothers they will be called, in their inheritance.

7 And I, when I came from Padan, Rachel died by me in the land of Canaan on the journey, while there was still a great deal of land to come to Ephrat,
and I entombed her there, on the journey to Ephrat. (This is Bethlehem).

15

and he said, Who are these?

9 And Joseph said to his father, They are the children that God has given me in this.
And he said, Lay hold of them, if you will, for me, that I may bless them.

13
10 And the eyes of Israel were heavy from age. He was unable to see.
And he brought them close to him, and he kissed them and clasped them.
3e 4C 16
17
11 And Israel said to Joseph, To see your face, I had not prayed,
and behold God has shown me also your seed.
3d 4C 18
15
12 And Joseph brought them forth from about his knees,
and he prostrated himself, his nose earthward.

13 And Joseph took the two of them, Ephraim by his right hand on the left of Israel, and Manasseh by his left hand on the right of Israel,
and came close to him.
3e 4C 33
5
14 And Israel extended his right hand to set over the head of Ephraim (and he of lesser account), and his left hand over the head of Manasseh,
insight with his hands, (for Manasseh was firstborn).
3e 4C 32
11
15 And he blessed Joseph and said,
This God before whom my fathers walked, Abraham and Yitschaq, this God who tended me while I have been to this day,

16 The angel that redeemed me from all evil, will bless the lads, and let my name be called in them and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Yitschaq,
and let them spawn to a multitude within the earth.

11

17 And Joseph saw that his father set his right hand over the head of Ephraim, and it was irritating in his eyes,
and he held up the hand of his father to put it aside from off the head of Ephraim onto the head of Manasseh.
3c 4B 22
21
18 And Joseph said to his father, Not so, my father,
for this is the firstborn. Set your right hand on his head.
3c 4B 12
11

19 And his father would not, saying I know, my son. I know he also will become a people, and also he will be great.
However, his brother, the lesser, will be greater than he, and his seed will fill the nations.
3e 4C 27
22
20 And he blessed them in that day, saying, In you Israel will bless, saying, God render you like Ephraim and like Manasseh.
And he set Ephraim before Manasseh.
3e 4C 33
11
21 And Israel said to Joseph, Behold, I am to die,
but God will be with you, and he will return you to the land of your ancestors.
3e 4C 15
21

22 And I, I have given to you one Shechem over your brothers,
that I took from the hand of the Amorite with my sword and with my bow.
