וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר | 1 | And the word of Yahweh happened to me, saying, | 3e | 3g | 10
בֶּן־אָדָ֕ם ח֥וּד חִידָ֖ה וּמְשֹׁ֣ל מָשָׁ֑ל אֶל־בֵּ֖ית יִשְׂרָאֵֽל | 2 | Child of humanity, riddle a riddle, and parable a parable, to the house of Israel. | 3e | 4B | 10 5
וְאָמַרְתָּ֞ כֹּה־אָמַ֣ר ׀ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֗ה הַנֶּ֤שֶׁר הַגָּדוֹל֙ גְּד֤וֹל הַכְּנָפַ֙יִם֙ אֶ֣רֶךְ הָאֵ֔בֶר מָלֵא֙ הַנּוֹצָ֔ה אֲשֶׁר־ל֖וֹ הָֽרִקְמָ֑ה בָּ֚א אֶל־הַלְּבָנ֔וֹן וַיִּקַּ֖ח אֶת־צַמֶּ֥רֶת הָאָֽרֶז | 3 | And say, thus says my Lord Yahweh, The great eagle of great wings, prolonged of pinion, full of plumage that was its embroidery, had come to Lebanon and he took from the woolly foliage of the cedar. | 3e | 4C | 39 15
אֵ֛ת רֹ֥אשׁ יְנִֽיקוֹתָ֖יו קָטָ֑ף וַיְבִיאֵ֙הוּ֙ אֶל־אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן בְּעִ֥יר רֹכְלִ֖ים שָׂמֽוֹ | 4 | d | The top of innocent twigs, it plucked, and they brought it to the land of shopkeepers. In the city of merchants they set it. | 3d | 4B | 8 16 |
וַיִּקַּח֙ מִזֶּ֣רַע הָאָ֔רֶץ וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖הוּ בִּשְׂדֵה־זָ֑רַע קָ֚ח עַל־מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֔ים צַפְצָפָ֖ה שָׂמֽוֹ | 5 | And he took from the seed of the land and gave it into a seeded field. It took. By many cascading waters, he set it. | 3e | 4C | 17 10
וַיִּצְמַ֡ח וַיְהִי֩ לְגֶ֨פֶן סֹרַ֜חַת שִׁפְלַ֣ת קוֹמָ֗ה לִפְנ֤וֹת דָּלִיּוֹתָיו֙ אֵלָ֔יו וְשָׁרָשָׁ֖יו תַּחְתָּ֣יו יִֽהְי֑וּ וַתְּהִ֣י לְגֶ֔פֶן וַתַּ֣עַשׂ בַּדִּ֔ים וַתְּשַׁלַּ֖ח פֹּארֽוֹת | 6 | And it grew and became a sprawling vine, humble of place. Its tresses faced him and its roots were under him, and it became as a vine, and it made shafts and it sent out adornments. | 3e | 4C | 31 15
וַיְהִ֤י נֶֽשֶׁר־אֶחָד֙ גָּד֔וֹל גְּד֥וֹל כְּנָפַ֖יִם וְרַב־נוֹצָ֑ה וְהִנֵּה֩ הַגֶּ֨פֶן הַזֹּ֜את כָּֽפְנָ֧ה שָׁרֳשֶׁ֣יהָ עָלָ֗יו וְדָֽלִיּוֹתָיו֙ שִׁלְחָה־לּ֔וֹ לְהַשְׁק֣וֹת אוֹתָ֔הּ מֵעֲרֻג֖וֹת מַטָּעָֽהּ | 7 | And there was another great eagle of great wings and abundant plumage, and behold this vine faced its roots to him. Its tresses it sent out to him, that he might irrigate it from the terraces of its plantings. | 3c | 4C | 17 36
אֶל־שָׂ֥דֶה טּ֛וֹב אֶל־מַ֥יִם רַבִּ֖ים הִ֣יא שְׁתוּלָ֑ה לַעֲשׂ֤וֹת עָנָף֙ וְלָשֵׂ֣את פֶּ֔רִי לִהְי֖וֹת לְגֶ֥פֶן אַדָּֽרֶת | 8 | To a good field, to many waters it was transplanted, to make bough and to bear fruit, to become a majestic vine. | 3d | 4C | 12 18
אֱמֹ֗ר כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֛ר אֲדֹנָ֥י יְהֹוִ֖ה תִּצְלָ֑ח הֲלוֹא֩ אֶת־שָׁרָשֶׁ֨יהָ יְנַתֵּ֜ק וְאֶת־פִּרְיָ֣הּ ׀ יְקוֹסֵ֣ס וְיָבֵ֗שׁ כָּל־טַרְפֵּ֤י צִמְחָהּ֙ תִּיבָ֔שׁ וְלֹֽא־בִזְרֹ֤עַ גְּדוֹלָה֙ וּבְעַם־רָ֔ב לְמַשְׂא֥וֹת אוֹתָ֖הּ מִשָּׁרָשֶֽׁיהָ | 9 | Say, Thus says my Lord Yahweh, It will prosper? Her roots, will he not snap and her fruit amputate? And it will dry up. All preying growth will dry up. And no great arm or abundant people will lift it up by its root. | 3d | 4C | 13 48
וְהִנֵּ֥ה שְׁתוּלָ֖ה הֲתִצְלָ֑ח הֲלוֹא֩ כְגַ֨עַת בָּ֜הּ ר֤וּחַ הַקָּדִים֙ תִּיבַ֣שׁ יָבֹ֔שׁ עַל־עֲרֻגֹ֥ת צִמְחָ֖הּ תִּיבָֽשׁ | 10 | So behold, transplanted, will it prosper? Will the east wind not touch it and it will dry up? Over the terraces of its growth, it will dry up. | 3e | 4C | 9 23
וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥י לֵאמֹֽר | 11 | And the word of Yahweh happened to me, saying, | 3e | 3g | 10
אֱמָר־נָא֙ לְבֵ֣ית הַמֶּ֔רִי הֲלֹ֥א יְדַעְתֶּ֖ם מָה־אֵ֑לֶּה אֱמֹ֗ר הִנֵּה־בָ֨א מֶֽלֶךְ־בָּבֶ֤ל יְרוּשָׁלִַ֙ם֙ וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֶת־מַלְכָּהּ֙ וְאֶת־שָׂרֶ֔יהָ וַיָּבֵ֥א אוֹתָ֛ם אֵלָ֖יו בָּבֶֽלָה | 12 | Say, please, to the house of provocation, Do you not know what these are? Say, Behold, the king of Babel entered Jerusalem, and he took the king and her nobility, and he brought them to himself toward Babel. | 3d | 4C | 16 34
וַיִּקַּח֙ מִזֶּ֣רַע הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה וַיִּכְרֹ֥ת אִתּ֖וֹ בְּרִ֑ית וַיָּבֵ֤א אֹתוֹ֙ בְּאָלָ֔ה וְאֶת־אֵילֵ֥י הָאָ֖רֶץ לָקָֽח | 13 | And he took from the seed of royalty, and he cut a covenant with him, and he brought him into an avowal, and the potentates of the land, he has taken, | 3e | 4C | 16 17
לִֽהְיוֹת֙ מַמְלָכָ֣ה שְׁפָלָ֔ה לְבִלְתִּ֖י הִתְנַשֵּׂ֑א לִשְׁמֹ֥ר אֶת־בְּרִית֖וֹ לְעָמְדָֽהּ | 14 | To be a humble kingdom that would not lift itself up, to keep his covenant, that it might stand. | 3e | 4B | 14 9
וַיִּמְרָד־בּ֗וֹ לִשְׁלֹ֤חַ מַלְאָכָיו֙ מִצְרַ֔יִם לָֽתֶת־ל֥וֹ סוּסִ֖ים וְעַם־רָ֑ב הֲיִצְלָ֤ח הֲיִמָּלֵט֙ הָעֹשֵׂ֣ה אֵ֔לֶּה וְהֵפֵ֥ר בְּרִ֖ית וְנִמְלָֽט | 15 | And he mutinied against him by sending out his messengers to Egypt to give him horses and abundant people. Will it thrive? Will one who does an avowal escape, and annul a covenant, and escape? | 3e | 4C | 20 20
חַי־אָ֗נִי נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֒ אִם־לֹ֗א בִּמְקוֹם֙ הַמֶּ֙לֶךְ֙ הַמַּמְלִ֣יךְ אֹת֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּזָה֙ אֶת־אָ֣לָת֔וֹ וַאֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵפֵ֖ר אֶת־בְּרִית֑וֹ אִתּ֥וֹ בְתוֹךְ־בָּבֶ֖ל יָמֽוּת | 16 | I, Living, an oracle of my Lord Yahweh, Without fail, in the place of the king, the one who made him king, whose avowal he despises, and whose covenant he annulled, with him, in the midst of Babel he will die. | 3e | 4C | 38 8
וְלֹא֩ בְחַ֨יִל גָּד֜וֹל וּבְקָהָ֣ל רָ֗ב יַעֲשֶׂ֨ה אוֹת֤וֹ פַרְעֹה֙ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה בִּשְׁפֹּ֥ךְ סֹלְלָ֖ה וּבִבְנ֣וֹת דָּיֵ֑ק לְהַכְרִ֖ית נְפָשׁ֥וֹת רַבּֽוֹת | 17 | And no great force or abundant congregation will Pharaoh make for him in battle, to pour out a ramp or build a siege-wall, to cut off many throats. | 3e | 4C | 31 8
וּבָזָ֥ה אָלָ֖ה לְהָפֵ֣ר בְּרִ֑ית וְהִנֵּ֨ה נָתַ֥ן יָד֛וֹ וְכָל־אֵ֥לֶּה עָשָׂ֖ה לֹ֥א יִמָּלֵֽט | 18 | For he despised an avowal, to annul a covenant, and behold, he had given his hand, and all this has done. He will not escape. | 3d | 4B | 10 17
לָכֵ֞ן כֹּה־אָמַ֨ר אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִה֮ חַי־אָנִי֒ אִם־לֹ֗א אָֽלָתִי֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּזָ֔ה וּבְרִיתִ֖י אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֵפִ֑יר וּנְתַתִּ֖יו בְּרֹאשֽׁוֹ | 19 | Therefore thus says my Lord Yahweh, I Living, without fail, my avowal it is that he despises, and my covenant it is that he has annulled, and I will assign it on his own head. | 3e | 4B | 28 6
וּפָרַשְׂתִּ֤י עָלָיו֙ רִשְׁתִּ֔י וְנִתְפַּ֖שׂ בִּמְצֽוּדָתִ֑י וַהֲבִיאוֹתִ֣יהוּ בָבֶ֗לָה וְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּ֤י אִתּוֹ֙ שָׁ֔ם מַעֲל֖וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר מָֽעַל־בִּֽי | 20 | And I will spread over him my net, and he will be arrested in my hunt, and I will bring him toward Babel, and I will judge him there for his trespass which he has trespassed against me. | 3e | 4C | 15 24
וְאֵ֨ת כָּל־מִבְרָחָ֤יו בְּכָל־אֲגַפָּיו֙ בַּחֶ֣רֶב יִפֹּ֔לוּ וְהַנִּשְׁאָרִ֖ים לְכָל־ר֣וּחַ יִפָּרֵ֑שׂוּ וִידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּֽרְתִּי | 21 | And all his fugitives in all his legions by the sword will fall, and the residue to every wind will be spread, and you will know that I am Yahweh. I have spoken. | 3d | 4C | 30 11
כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣י יְהוִ֔ה וְלָקַ֣חְתִּי אָ֗נִי מִצַּמֶּ֧רֶת הָאֶ֛רֶז הָרָמָ֖ה וְנָתָ֑תִּי מֵרֹ֤אשׁ יֹֽנְקוֹתָיו֙ רַ֣ךְ אֶקְטֹ֔ף וְשָׁתַ֣לְתִּי אָ֔נִי עַ֥ל הַר־גָּבֹ֖הַ וְתָלֽוּל | 22 | C | Thus says my Lord Yahweh, And I myself will take from the woolly foliage of the high cedar that I will give. From the top of its nursling shoots, a tender one I will pluck, that I myself will transplant above a haughty and venerable hill. | 3c | 4C | 28 22 |
בְּהַ֨ר מְר֤וֹם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶשְׁתֳּלֶ֔נּוּ וְנָשָׂ֤א עָנָף֙ וְעָ֣שָׂה פֶ֔רִי וְהָיָ֖ה לְאֶ֣רֶז אַדִּ֑יר וְשָׁכְנ֣וּ תַחְתָּ֗יו כֹּ֚ל צִפּ֣וֹר כָּל־כָּנָ֔ף בְּצֵ֥ל דָּלִיּוֹתָ֖יו תִּשְׁכֹּֽנָּה | 23 | In the mountain of the high ground of Israel I will transplant it, and it will lift up a bough, and will make fruit, and it will be a majestic cedar, and will dwell under it every bird of every wing. In the shadow of its tresses they will dwell. | 3e | 4C | 29 20
וְֽיָדְע֞וּ כָּל־עֲצֵ֣י הַשָּׂדֶ֗ה כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ הִשְׁפַּ֣לְתִּי ׀ עֵ֣ץ גָּבֹ֗הַ הִגְבַּ֙הְתִּי֙ עֵ֣ץ שָׁפָ֔ל הוֹבַ֙שְׁתִּי֙ עֵ֣ץ לָ֔ח וְהִפְרַ֖חְתִּי עֵ֣ץ יָבֵ֑שׁ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי וְעָשִֽׂיתִי | 24 | And all the trees of the field will know that I Yahweh have humbled a tree of stature, have given stature to a tree abased, have dried up a fresh tree, and have made flourish a dried up tree. I am Yahweh. I have spoken and I have acted. | 3e | 4C | 39 11 |

Ezekiel 17
The chapter begins and ends with riddle, and like one or two the parables of Jesus in Matthew, in this case, we also have an explanation from the text itself. Perhaps it is even a taste of the character of Ezekiel, visionary and poet. Many of us are sufficiently prolonged of pinion that we can't change our minds. (Joke). Verse 23 provides the image for a NT parable of the kingdom (Matthew 13:32, Luke 13:19).
