Jeremiah 41

Filling in some holes in my sequences. Almost completed the last chapters of Jeremiah.

This aftermath of destruction is not a credit to the people involved. Of course we know none of them personally. But they were all labelled as 'child of x', and there were 'little ones' as you can read. There is both betrayal and rescue.

Jeremiah 41 Fn Min Max Syll

1 And it happened in the seventh month, Yishmaeil child of Nathaniah, child of Elishama, from the seed of royalty, and overlords of the king, and ten soldiers with him, to Gedoliah, child of Ahiqam, came to Mizpah,
and they ate bread there, as one, in Mizpah.

Genesis 12

I thought in approaching and passing the 50% 'complete' milestone, I should do a chapter or two from some books that I have long ignored.

I came across something I hadn't yet considered in Genesis 12, beginning the story of Abraham.

What was the soul, הנפשׁ that Abram and Sarai took with them? I don't do soul, and it is not the souls, plural. There were undoubtedly other people in their party since they had stuff to carry for such an expedition. But soul, singular? Just another question and there will be more in this area, perhaps נפשׁ is a collective noun.  Wouldn't that be a surprise! E.g. Genesis 46:15, כָּל־נֶפֶשׁ בָּנָיו, all the soul of his children. Other translations just leave the word out. There we are. I do that too.

For the record, here are the glosses I have used to date for the root Nun Peh Shin
-- (part of the phrase, not specifically translated), being, cadaver, group, himself, individual, integrity, itself, myself, now, ourselves, own, self, themselves, throat, very self, vitality, yourselves.

This language issue aside, it is instructive to read this having seen a good chunk of the literary corpus that has arisen from this root.

This particular beginning for Abraham is somewhat ominous with respect to his relationship to 'the world'. Translations (like the KJV) may avoid the bald statement that Pharaoh took Sarai as wife. Given the flexibility one can impose on the Hebrew verb, this may be excusable. Perhaps she was only in the harem, and no coitus had occurred. The repetition of this episode with Isaac and Abimelek, (26:1-11) later in the story may tip us off, as any repetition should, to a larger structural move to highlight what is contained. (Or it may be just a repetition, a failure to learn to avoid offense.)

In this section, the migration into and out of the land and into and out of Egypt is surrounded by Abram and all that he had, verses 5 elaborately stated, and 20, simply summarized. Does this include all the gifts from Pharaoh?

Genesis 12 Fn Min Max Syll
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם לֶךְ־לְךָ֛ מֵאַרְצְךָ֥ וּמִמּֽוֹלַדְתְּךָ֖ וּמִבֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ

Jeremiah 52

This chapter is called an Appendix in my old JB. Really! It is a summary of the destruction and a reflection of all the items of cultic value that were ruined for their precious metals. It reads and sings like a lament for a lost culture. Verse 18, another long verse with no rest, just a continuing list of things lost, and this continuing into verse 19 (bars 158-168 below). (It's different, isn't it, thinking of a scripture verse with bar numbers.)

Capital (כפתר) is also כתר, so close it seems the peh got dropped between Exodus 25 and Jeremiah 52. Not impossible, I suppose. I have let them be equivalent in English.

Notes on recent changes

Some time ago in the last 6 months, I noticed confusion between אישׁ and אנושׁ in the various dictionaries I use. The Hebrew Latin concordance clearly distinguishes the plural of the first as אנשׁים. Some online resources confuse this with a plural of אנושׁ, a form that never occurs in the Latin concordance. Both these are in the domain of the Creation-Human.

What is this man? This is a difficult problem and I found it awkward in almost every instance over the past 10 years. I was confused by the limitations of language structures related to he / she / it as well as the desire to be gender inclusive where feasible and where appropriate (whatever that means). I said, 'I will use man / men wherever it is obvious that there is a man intended', but this is impossible in some cases. So I have various other nouns that fit the bill, and avoid the distinction of gender. So e.g.
אישׁ --, adult, another, any, anyone, each, everyone, hero, man, men, one, other, person, personal, representative, rider, soldier, someone, spouse, such,
אנושׁ Enosh, mortal, mortality. This word is related to אנשׁ incurable. And it never occurs in the plural. The plural form if it is there is like sheep in English, both singular and plural.

But it is traditional to translate both אישׁ and אנושׁ as man / men.

As you can see, I have avoided this. But I had confused the two Hebrew roots and yesterday with a dozen or two changes to work already done, I removed the confusion. (Yes, I also changed the published blog posts. I may give up on this but some posts also have formatting issues and they don't show the musical features that are sometimes useful to see, so I am gradually changing them anyway, and any secondary excuse makes it worthwhile cleaning up the past, even if insignificant.)

You can also see that I have sometimes just not translated the word (--). In all these cases the word is implied by the following word like man of war may become warrior.

The word mortal, is turns out, is only used once in the KJV OT. I was surprised at this. I use it quite frequently. (And there are 49 occurrences in the data.)

Interesting that my work is both mortal and soulless! Perhaps I will throw one soul in at the end. Now some will say that soul is not נפשׁ anyway, but נשׁמה, and this is related to the breath-bearing of Psalm 150 and the process of breathing in giving birth to a new breathing person. Well, I don't use soul here either. At the moment, נשׁם is breath, breath-bearing, and swan.

In this work, I must face my confusion. In all design work, the point of weakness must be noted and dealt with. How much more such weakness can I bear?

The Latin rendering of the Hebrew for these words bears witness to the origin of the confusion in Hebrew-English glossaries.
אישׁ vir, maritus, mas virilis aetatis, homo, quisque, comites, sectatores, milites
man, husband, man 's age, virility, man, each one, companions, followers, soldiers,
אנושׁ homo!

(note there is no need for confusion with אדם)
אדם Adam, debris of the ground, dust-bowls, dyed red, earthling, ground, human, humanity, humus, ruddy.

note also the absence of husband (בעל) in my list for אישׁ.

אדם is never man in my work but it is often so in traditional translations.

I can't take any credit for this move. I am a product of many stimuli and I can scarcely identify them. A major one is growing up with the words of Scripture in the King James translation in both reading and musical training, in an era that questioned the dominance of the male and the divine right of kings. I hope the music took over the bias of the reading. Another is having a Latin and music teacher (and priest) who was severely abusive. That should have driven me to drink, but that it didn't is no justification for the incurable man, אישׁ אנשׁ or perhaps just mortal אנושׁ.

I welcome feedback. I know there are things I cannot see or do not hear at present.

Jeremiah 39

I have just come from a lovely talk at the Synagogue on Arabic influences in modern Hebrew. It occurred to me that hearing such nuance in modern borrowings is something we know, but how do we do such in an ancient tongue such as we are reading here? The speaker explained by dozens of examples how such talk varies by region, by demographic, and by time period, and here I am looking at the ancient tongue as a puzzle that is synchronic, appearing to me all at once in a given form. Obviously it wasn't so written. But perhaps we hear the Hebrew spoken by the Babylonians in the last two posts as different, as deliberately rude and provocative.

Here is the actual destruction. What we lack in the nuance of language is made up for in the music.

There is no rest in verse 1, the verse that heralds the destruction. The patterns of panic in the text are mimicked in the music in verses 4 and 5. (Just observe the syllable counts.) The drama of lament is anticipated in verses 6 to 9. Don't reshape them for speed-reading. Verse 15-18 show that Yahweh has favorites. Perhaps the intent of the destruction was to shake up the elite 8 people who owned 99% of the city.

Isaiah 36

You can be sure I might have noted this similarity some time during the past 50 years, but like most things that I watch on TV, I had forgotten. So Isaiah 36 was 92% complete after I did 2 Kings 18. How curious. I may remember this now for a while. (Note no rest in verse 1). The point of view of this chapter is not entirely clear (e.g. v 5).

Isaiah 36 Fn Min Max Syll
וַיְהִ֡י בְּאַרְבַּע֩ עֶשְׂרֵ֨ה שָׁנָ֜ה לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ חִזְקִיָּ֗הוּ עָלָ֞ה סַנְחֵרִ֤יב מֶֽלֶךְ־אַשּׁוּר֙ עַ֣ל כָּל־עָרֵ֧י יְהוּדָ֛ה הַבְּצֻר֖וֹת וַֽיִּתְפְּשֵֽׂם 1 It was the fourteenth year of the reign of Hezekiah that Senacherib king of Ashur came up to all the cities of Judah enclosed and occupied them. 3c 4C 39
2 And the king of Ashur sent to a cupbearer overlord from Lachish toward Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with heavy force.
And he stood by the conduit of the blessing pool, the upper part, on the highway to the field of the fuller.

3 And Elyaqim child of Hilqiah, who is over the house, went out to him,
and Shebna the secretary, and Joah child of Asaph, the archivist.

Yahweh said to me, Go up to this land and destroy it.

2 Kings 18

It may be that I am letting the word sequences take me by similarities around the newspapers of the complex generations of conflict, deportation, and exile in Judah and Israel with Assyria (Ashur) and Babylon (Babel). This is not history that I am very familiar with, nor is it easy to discover. Snippets of information occur in the prophets and in the books of Kings and Chronicles. Hopefully patterns will emerge and give some clarity as we navigate the archives. There are various charts around the web showing who was who when. Quite a few on Wikipedia, and carefully constructed. I find the only way to 'get the picture' is to construct one's own, but it would be a distraction at the moment.

I am having enough trouble with the reading itself. The language structure is more awkward here (and in a couple of recent chapters) than I recall, word orders like v, s, s, s, a verb followed by three subjects, a delegation, where I would have to move the English verb a mile from its original musical location. (I don't mind moving it an inch.) And names of characters that are not names but more likely titles, revealing a role one might not expect like chief cupbearer. I did not use chief, but overlord. I could make an exception to my rules and let רב and שר overlap, but overlord sounds like a suitable name for this persuasive character who takes Yahweh as his authority, even if deceitfully, (he knows the jargon) to the chagrin of the Judeans.

It's worth noting, given some dispute over the covering the feet euphemism, that in this case the dung and piss of the KJV interprets the euphemism, as does the JB, (dung and urine), and I have not done so below.

Hoshea was the last king of Israel (732-722) Hezekiah's dates are disputed. The articles compare four estimates from historians. (Told you it would be a distraction.)

12 B In that they did not hear with the voice of Yahweh their God, and they bypassed his covenant,
all that Moses the servant of Yahweh commanded, both they did not hear and they had not done.

14 And Hezekiah king of Judah sent to the king of Ashur towards Lachish, saying, I have sinned. Turn back from me. What you assign against me, I will bear.
And the king of Ashur set over Hezekiah, king of Judah, three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold.

15 And Hezekiah gave all the silver that was found in the house of Yahweh,
and in the treasuries of the house of the king.

16 At that time Hezekiah sundered the gateways of the temple of Yahweh,
(and the faithfulness which Hezekiah king of Judah had overlaid) and he gave them to the king of Ashur.

17 And the king of Ashur sent a field marshall and a eunuch overlord and a cupbearer overlord from Lachish to king Hezekiah with heavy force to Jerusalem,
and they went up and they entered Jerusalem, and they went up and they came and they stood by the conduit of the blessing pool, the upper part that is on the highway to the field of the fuller.

27 And the overlord cupbearer said to them, Is it against your Lord or against you, that my Lord sent me to speak these words?

Some time ago, I looked at the domain of culture-rule with respect to nouns. It has gotten more complex The list below only touches the surface, for each of these nouns has other common glosses, both noun and verb. Yet it seems that titles of authorities have come from other words. I am still trying to imagine how I will use analytical techniques to critique my glosses when I get more and more towards completion. I think I will need English parsing algorithms for both verbs and nouns.
