Ezra 5

Aramaic is not familiar to me. Its parsing varies from Hebrew binyanim. Construct is often explicitly helped by a preposition. Its words have many similar meanings if not identical but there are many overlaps that slow my reading down. In the Hebrew chapters, a verse takes a minute or two to read, because generally many of the words have already been guessed based on pattern recognition by the computer. In the Aramaic chapters, every new word is an exploration.

In Aramaic chapters, the pattern recognition chooses from them first, but then drops into the Hebrew patterns where it finds very few alike. That is an interesting result in itself. For those it does find, one can read into what the word seems to mean from the context, but it seems more fun to imagine the two languages drifting apart from each other and the meanings of words carrying unexpected overtones. Example: סתר, hide, or secret I was tempted to render secreted, but eventually went with the commonplace did away with. Sure it was destroyed. But one might imagine that it was also hidden in an alternative reality for a period.

1 And the prophets, Haggai the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied to the Judeans who were in Judea and in Jerusalem,
in the name of the God of Israel, to them.

2 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, Jeshua son of Jotsadaq, arose and got the building of the house of God underway that is in Jerusalem,
and with them, the prophets of God confirming them.

3 In that season for them, Tatnaii viceroy of beyond the river arrived, and Shetar Bozni and their confederates,
and said thus to them, Who set in place for you the warrant to build this house or to consolidate this structure.

Who are these, the names of the men of valour, who build this building?

5 But the eye of their God was over the grey-haired of the Judeans, and they could not make them stop until the warrant came to Darius,
and they then responded by return mail to it.

To Darius the king, all peace,

8 Be it known to the king that we went to Judea the province, to the house of God, the great, and it is built with rolling stone, and timber is laid in its embankments,
and this service is promptly being served and prospers in their hands.

that we will write the name of the men of valour who are their heads.

11 And thus they responded to us an injunction, saying,
We are they, servants of the God of the heavens and the earth, and build the house that itself was built before these many years, and a great king of Israel built and finished it.

12 But in that our ancestors made the God of the heavens shudder, he provided them to the hand of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babel, the Chaldean,
and this house he did away with and had the people exiled to Babel.

13 Yet in the first year of Cyrus the king of Babel,
Cyrus the king set a warrant to build this house of God.
3e 4C 14
15

14 ~ And also the vessels of the house of God of gold and silver that Nebuchadnezzar had appropriated from the temple that was in Jerusalem and had escorted them to the temple of Babel,
Cyrus the king had them appropriated from the temple of Babel, and they were provided to Sheshbazzar, by name, whom he had set as viceroy.

15 And he said to him, Bear these vessels. Go. Stow them in the temple that was in Jerusalem,
and let the house of God be built in its place.
3e 4C 22
11
16 Then this Sheshbazzar arrived. He provided the foundation of the house of God that is in Jerusalem,
and from then and till now it has been in building, but it is not whole.

17 And now if to the king it be good to reflect in the house of the depositories of the king, that is there in Babel, whether it be so that from Cyrus the king was set the warrant to build this house of God in Jerusalem,
then let the resolution of the king on this be sent to us.
