1 Kings 11

We have returned to the histories. Here is Solomon's chapter, the degeneration of the polity of the united monarchy. These are tensions that can be seen in the earliest history, as noted in Joshua 22. To speak of something as united is to recognize the reality of disunity.

I did not describe Jeroboam as industrious. This creative hapax (in English) in the KJV creates the impression for me that there is some uniqueness to the construction.  The combination of מאלך and עשה is frequent (46 occurrences), but industrious occurs only once in the KJV. So I have left in the suggestions of my constrained computer-aided tongue. I think it is important to see these two words used together and how they connect to Sabbath, creation, and communication. If we combine them into one word in the target tongue, we fail to allow the connections and their use within the source language.

מלאך affair(1), affairs(9), angel(37), angels(2), line work(11), lines work(49), Malachi(1), messenger(45), messengers(35), trade(16)
עשׂה -do(1), .. make(1), achieve(1), act(2), acted(1), acts(2), all done(1), ask deal(1), construct(48), constructed(42), constructing(5), construction(12), constructs(1), course(1), deal(16), dealing(2), deals(6), dealt(12), deed(29), deeds(70), do(2), doer(1), doers(1), doing(63), doings(2), done(187), made out(1), made(201), make out(6), make(114), maker(10), makers(1), makes(19), making(19), mark deeds(1), more doing(1), more maker(1), operate(2), operated(2), operation(1), operators(1), particular deed(1), plying(5), something(1), that's done(2), there done(1), through deeds(1), through own deeds(1), undertake(46), undertaken(8), undertaking(2), undertook(33), untranslated(1)

So Jeroboam was good at trade, construction, getting things done, and he was a man of valour and force, someone to be reckoned with, God's instrument for the disunity of Israel, altogether an attractive bloke. Remarkable introduction given his pals and his rudeness later on in his life. He was the king's servant and yet he exalted or contributed (רום) a hand against the king.

Interesting that the prophet's name (Achiyah) got interpreted by my algorithms as "I will live". It can be read that way. I don't always translate the names. They are just monikers sometimes.

What kind of a character is given to Yahweh in this passage? The house of Jeroboam beginning with all his gifts and capacity does not ultimately fare well. Is the offer of all that 'his integrity desires' a safe offer? Should we be cautious of promises that might 'go to our heads'?  You can see that my choice of integrity suggests some irony. Who knows what to do with this word, נפשׁ!

and his heart was not at peace with Yahweh his God, as was the heart of David his father.
