10 And he sent Hadoram his son to king David to ask him for peace and to bless him, in that he had warred with Hadadezer and had struck him, (for a man of war Tou was with Hadadezer),
and all instruments of gold and silver and brass.

12
11 Them also king David sanctified to Yahweh with the silver and the gold that he lifted up from all the nations:
from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek.
3e 4C 29
21
12 And Abishai child of Tseruyah struck Edom in the salt gorge, eighteen thousand. 3e 4C 24

So Yahweh made David victorious wherever he went.

and Jehoshaphat, child of Achilud, archivist.
3e 4A 11

16 And Zadok, child of Achitov, and Abimelek, child of Abiatar, priests,
and Shavsha, secretary.
3c 4A 19
5
17 And Beniah, child of Jehoiada, was over the Cheretites and the Pelethites,
and the children of David were preeminent, handy to the king.

12

There are lots of small differences between this chapter and the parallel in 2 Samuel 8, up next.

Compare verse 6 - different spellings of words.

Chronicles
Samuel

Compare the names of the cities in verse 8. (See the next post). Note too how the Chronicler knows more than the writer of Samuel.

Or consider how verse 10 leaves out some words. The words can be read into the gap at the caesura. Also the names are slightly different. Tou/Toi, Hadarezer/Hadadezer (an easy misreading of ר for ד.)

Chronicles
Samuel

JB resolves the conflicting name of Toi/Tou without comment. JB footnotes Psalm 60's inscription as the psalm for this incident. Edom and Moab were not to be meddled with according to Exodus 16, but they clearly are a source of trouble (not to mention the gift of Ruth) for David. Perhaps all is not as it seems on the surface.

A lot of questions occur to me as I read this. Was there a gang of rulers? Conflict of interest? (King rules with children). Justice for whom? Subservience? Adulation? Names we might think are righteous may not be so. (We are all cut from the same cloth).

Compare verse 18. David's children were כהנים, priests in 2 Samuel. Here they are only handy to the king. I wonder why KJV suppressed this bald power sharing and JB, the RC Bible, explains it away. REB is blunt and accurate and without explanation, but we never read this passage anyway! NIV has royal advisors. What for! Are we trying to avoid contradiction in the Bible just because we think it should not say what it reads?
