Nehemiah 1

Another short chapter before exiting to the opera workshop for a student performance of the Marriage of Figaro. Marriage is a timeless image. Here we have had a divorce. Temporary, we hope. Let faithfulness be restored. We must note that there is a crying need for such faithfulness in our political and military worlds today.

Nehemiah, from נאם, comfort, comforter. It is the comforter that rebuilds the temple, of course.

Nehemiah 1 Fn Min Max Syll
1 The words of Nehemiah, child of Hikaliah,
and it happened in the new moon of Kislev, the twentieth year, and I, I was in Shushan, the temple precincts.

2 And Hanani came, one of my kin, himself and soldiers from Judah,
and I asked them concerning the Judeans that had been secured, that were residue from the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem.

3 And they said to me, The residue, that are residue from the captivity there in the province, are hurting greatly and are reproached.
And the wall of Jerusalem is breached, and her gates charred in the fire.

4 And it happened as I heard these words, I sat and I wept and lamented daily,
and I was fasting and praying before the God of the heavens.

5 And I said, beseeching, Yahweh the God of the heavens, the One great and fearful,
keeping the covenant and kindness for those who love him and who keep his commandments,

6 Let be, if you will, your ear attentive, and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant, that I pray before you today, day and night over the children of Israel, your servants,
and acknowledging the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against you. Both I and the house of my father, we have sinned.

7 We have inflicted pain on you,
and we have not kept the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, that you commanded Moses your servant.

8 Remember, if you will, the word that you commanded Moses, your servant, saying,
You, you trespass. I, I will disperse you among the peoples.

14
9 But return to me, and keep my commandments, and do them.
Though you were banished at the outskirts of the heavens, from there I would collect them, and would bring them to the place where I have chosen to let my name dwell there.

10 And they are your servants and your people,
which you have ransomed in your great power and with your resolute hand.

11 Beseeching my Lord, let be, if you will, your ear attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants, who delight to fear your name, and prosper, if you will, your servant today, and grant him compassion in the presence of this man,
for I was cupbearer to the king.
