Isaiah 61

A short chapter. I wonder how this was near the bottom of my list. The words were recognized by the automation only one at a time. So Isaiah is a unique voice. He does not have phrases that repeat from the work that I have done so far. (Though we have seen a few such chapters - like Isaiah 36 which overlaps considerably with 2 Kings 18.)

As always, there are surprises. The acceptable year is an acceptable year. I don't see the usual justification for definiteness in this construction. It may not be important to stress it. I wonder what to do about verse 6. Praise is not always without correction, so I am happy that there is a reminder of the need for amending oneself. The double joy on a low c is odd. What does the music tell us of the phrasing of this song?

  • opens on d. There is some connection with what has preceded this chapter
  • The anointing of verse 1 is uniquely ornamented.
  • Shame (v 7) is highlighted - one rejoices in one's share. Here is a source perhaps for a Pauline phrase.
  • Verse 10 also jumps from the low c to the dominant high B. A not a rare jump. It occurs 12 times in Isaiah alone. But just a 257 instances in several thousand pages of music.
  • Verse 11 continues the thought (but I did close the sentence in verse 11 in any case).
Writing for the music needs some flexibility. If anyone is setting these words in another tongue, be flexible.

1 d The spirit of my Lord Yahweh is upon me,
because Yahweh anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted. He sent me to bandage the broken of heart, to proclaim to the captives, liberty, and to the bound, opening of prison.

2 To proclaim an acceptable year of Yahweh, and a day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all those who lament.

3 To set up for those who lament in Zion, to give them adornment instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of lament, a wrapping of praise instead of the spirit of lessening,
and it will be called for them, an oak of righteousness, the planting of Yahweh, that he may be adorned.

4 And they will build the deserts of eras past, the desolations of former times they will raise up.
And they will make new the deserted cities, desolations of generation through generation.

5 And strangers will stand and tend your flocks,
and the children of the alien will be your farmers and your vine-dressers.

6 And you, the priests of Yahweh you will be called. Ministers of our God, they will say of you.
The wealth of nations you will eat, and in their glory you will amend yourselves.

7 C Under equivalent shame and humiliation, let them shout for joy in their share.
Therefore in their land, equivalence they will possess. Everlasting gladness will be theirs.

18
8 B For I Yahweh love judgment. I hate robbery in the burnt offering.
And I will assign their work in truth, and an everlasting covenant I will cut for them.

9 And their seed will be known in the nations, and their offspring in the midst of the peoples.
All who see them will recognize them, for they are the seed blessed of Yahweh.

10 c Joy! I will sing for joy in Yahweh. Let my being rejoice in my God, for he has clothed me in garments of salvation. A mantle of righteousness is my garb,
as a bridegroom priests himself with adornment, and as a bride decks herself with her instruments.
3c 4C 29
17
11 C For as the earth brings forth her growth, and as the garden her seed sprouts,
so my Lord, Yahweh, will make righteousness and praise grow in front of all the nations.
