Exodus 13

We can observe some repetition in Exodus about the firstborn. We saw it in chapter 34 and here it is at the beginning of the journey. We haven't done enough yet to identify if it is a significant structural element in the story.

Verse 5b, One of the things about 'religion' is that one sees a certain responsibility is required to the One who is worshiped. Created? What do we do? In trouble? How do we get out? Redeemed / ransomed? Who do we thank? Who serve? What is the nature of our freedom within the fact that all that we have we were given? And that of course applies to others as well. Religions can do horrible things and exercise abuse of power, but to let us see our responsibilities, that much is good. And is a response to 'what Yahweh did for me'.

וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֥ה לֵּאמֹֽר 1 And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 3e 3g 10

2 Sanctify to me all the firstborn, the firstling of every womb among the children of Israel, among the human and among the cattle.
Mine it is.

therefore I am offering to Yahweh every firstling of the womb, the males, and all the firstborn of my children, I ransom.

(but God said, Lest the people regret when they see war, and they turn toward Egypt),

before the people.
