Exodus 24

Loaded words. What is a loaded word? This chapter has two distinct stories. Distinct is loaded, story is loaded.

There are some difficult sentences to parse. Moses seems dismissive to the people at the base of the mountain. In some ways, he got what he deserved this first time up the mountain (hill, mount). What sort of management style is he executing? Yet the import of both stories is key to the human search and to human stability and governance and responsibility. There is beloved instruction here, but it may not be loaded with the import that we first impose on it.

In the Hebrew, נגשׁ is a loaded word. So far I have rendered it with one of the following: bring close (Amos 6:3), come close (Genesis 19:9, Jeremiah 42:1, Exodus 20:21), make overture (1 Samuel 17:16, 40, Job 40:19, Malachi 1:7-8, 2:12, Joel 4:9, Psalm 91:7), lump (Job 7:5), bump (Amos 9:13). Curious that it is used twice here and once with the briefest of cursory instruction.

Verse 9 has the odd verb subject order to preserve the atnah.
