2 Kings 16

I recall when I read these 40 to 50 years ago (in various English translations) that I thought, what were they doing with all this worship of idols? Passing through fire, I could figure out. Not a good idea. But the idea of idolatry was a bit of a mystery. It boils down in my mind these days to three things - abuse of gifts, abuse of power, whether material, money, sex, or status, and the resulting violent fracturing of human relationships, to each other and to the created order. In this chapter, for a while, one might think that Ahaz was an artist, and appreciative of foreign customs, but for one reason or another, he needed the king of Ashur to support him, and he was quite willing to impress that foreign potentate with his control over the religious framework of Jerusalem. Perhaps this also violates a separation of priestly, prophetic and political power in Israel. Certainly there is plenty of political intrigue here and plenty of violence. But mostly his offence was that Yahweh was not a priority, but an afterthought.

I should probably not draw any final conclusions from these meandering thoughts.

2 Kings just appeared at the top of my lists. After messing about somewhat with Daniel in Aramaic, and various random verses looking for pieces of the puzzle I have not yet turned over, I have decided to just keep on picking the top of the automated suggestions. (Next up is Jeremiah 27.)

2 Kings 16 Fn Min Max Syll
1 In the seventeenth year of Peqach, child of Remalia,
Ahaz, child of Jotham, king of Judah reigned.

2 A child of twenty years was Ahaz when he began to reign, and sixteen years he reigned in Jerusalem.
And he did not do what is upright in the eyes of Yahweh his God, as David his father.

3 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel,
and moreover, he made his child pass through in the fire, according to the abominations of the nations whom Yahweh had dispossessed from before the children of Israel.

4 And he sacrificed and burnt incense on the high places,
and on the hillocks and under every green tree.

5 B Then Rezin king of Aram and Peqach child of Remalia king of Israel came up to Jerusalem to war,
and they laid siege against Ahaz and they were not able to fight.

6 At that time, Rezin king of Aram restored Eilat to Aram and cleared out the Judeans from Eilat.
And Edomites entered Eilat and they inhabit there until this day.

7 And Ahaz sent messengers to Tiglath-Pileser the king of Ashur, saying, Your servant and your son am I.
Come up and save me from the palm of the king of Aram, and from the palm of the king of Israel, who have arisen against me.

10 And king Ahaz went to encounter Tiglath-Pileser, the king of Ashur, at Damascus, and he saw the altar that was in Damascus,
and king Ahaz sent to Uriah the priest the likeness of the altar, and its pattern of all its construction.

11 And Uriah the priest built the altar according to all that king Ahaz sent from Damascus.
So Uriah the priest was doing while king Ahaz was coming from Damascus.

15 And king Ahaz commanded Uriah the priest, saying, Over the great altar, make the morning burnt offerings burn with smoke, and the gifts of the evening, and the burnt offering of the king and his gifts, and the burnt offerings of all the people of the land and their gifts and their libations, and all the blood of burnt offering and all the blood of sacrifice dash on it.
But the brass altar will be for me for reflection.

12

17 And king Ahaz sundered the fringes of the bases, and he put aside from them the laver, and the sea he brought down from the brass oxen that were under it,
and he positioned it onto a tessellation of stones.

18 And the screen for the Sabbath which they built in the house, and the entry of the king towards the outside, ... He turned round the house of Yahweh,
because of the presence of the king of Ashur.

19 And the remaining matters of Ahaz that he undertook,
are they not written in the record of the words of the days of the kings of Judah?

20

20 And Ahaz was laid out with his ancestors, and was entombed with his ancestors in the city of David.
And Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.
