Exodus 40

This was an interesting journey by way of deciding how to render certain words that are to my mind quite confusing in traditional renderings. I was never quite sure what tent, tabernacle, etc is being referred to in some situations. (And I still am uncertain because we have not done much of the prior 39 chapters yet.) But one thing I have noticed is that Yahweh seeks to dwell with the people, so I decided not to use tabernacle (since this confuses the term with booth and the feast of 'tabernacles') but rather dwelling-place, since this root is not connected to סכך (booth) bur to שׁכן (to dwell).

I also note here that נתן (give) is used for all sorts of actions by Moses in erecting the various pieces of the tent and its related equipment.

I suspect that several different groups of people over the centuries have wrestled with translating the Hebrew text of the Bible and have come up with some workable glossary / dictionary of roots and the words that are 'derived' from them. Which one is the least distracting? Which is one that will give the least bias to my choices of gloss? I do not actually have one, but many, in book form, and my own strangely evolving set of tables, roughly designed, behind my framework.

A particularly hard example: words containing ayin-daleth, עד. My Latin concordance lists three initial gloss sets for this two letter root, then three more that might look like עד but under עדה, then more again under the heading עוד, עד. And more again under the heading for יעד. And these are a very serious area of study including a concept as simple as a temporal preposition, to eternity, or a testimony, or witness, and so on. The data is so multifaceted, I cannot find an easy way to show it. My quick summary of glosses by root is this (so far after glossing over 90,000 words in the completed chapters):

עדה Adah, assembly, deck ...self, testimony, (This last seems to belong better with the next root as derived, but I have been inconsistent in driving down to the derived root in any case.)
עוד any longer, any more, attestation, been witness, before, before past, continue, ever, further, indeed, longer, more, never, persistent, relieve, since, still, testify, while. It is clear from this list that there are two or more distinct homonyms here and that sometimes עוד seems sometimes a plene spelling of the shorter עד. Any of these four words may appear as the two letters ayin+daleth.

The short answer that made me do this analysis is in verse 20: that the testimony (of the 2 tables of the law) is in the ark (verse 20). Psalm 119 is right to show love for this holy light on our situation.

Only the last verse has a beginning note that is not the default tonic. Verses 1 and 28 lack the atnah.

וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֙ אֶֽת־אַהֲרֹ֔ן אֵ֖ת בִּגְדֵ֣י הַקֹּ֑דֶשׁ וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֥ אֹת֛וֹ וְקִדַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹת֖וֹ וְכִהֵ֥ן לִֽי	13		And you will clothe Aaron with the garments of the sanctuary, and you will anoint him and sanctify him, and he will serve as priest for me.	3d	4B	14 16
וְאֶת־בָּנָ֖יו תַּקְרִ֑יב וְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּ֥ אֹתָ֖ם כֻּתֳּנֹֽת	14		And his children you will bring near, and you will clothe them with coats.	3e	4A	6 9
וּמָשַׁחְתָּ֣ אֹתָ֗ם כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר מָשַׁ֙חְתָּ֙ אֶת־אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וְכִהֲנ֖וּ לִ֑י וְ֠הָיְתָה לִהְיֹ֨ת לָהֶ֧ם מָשְׁחָתָ֛ם לִכְהֻנַּ֥ת עוֹלָ֖ם לְדֹרֹתָֽם	15		And you will anoint them as you anointed their father, and they will serve as priests for me. And it will be that their anointing will be for them for a priesthood, forever, for their generations.	3c	4C	21 19
וַיַּ֖עַשׂ מֹשֶׁ֑ה כְּ֠כֹל אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֹת֖וֹ כֵּ֥ן עָשָֽׂה	16		And Moses did. Everything that Yahweh commanded him, so he did.	3c	4A	5 13
וַיְהִ֞י בַּחֹ֧דֶשׁ הָרִאשׁ֛וֹן בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשֵּׁנִ֖ית בְּאֶחָ֣ד לַחֹ֑דֶשׁ הוּקַ֖ם הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן	17		And it happened in the first new moon in the second year on the first of the month, the dwelling-place was raised.	3c	4B	20 5
וַיָּ֨קֶם מֹשֶׁ֜ה אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֗ן וַיִּתֵּן֙ אֶת־אֲדָנָ֔יו וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶת־קְרָשָׁ֔יו וַיִּתֵּ֖ן אֶת־בְּרִיחָ֑יו וַיָּ֖קֶם אֶת־עַמּוּדָֽיו	18		And Moses raised up the dwelling-place and he tightened its sockets, and set its planks, and positioned its cross-beams, and raised up its pillars.	3e	4A	30 7
וַיִּפְרֹ֤שׂ אֶת־הָאֹ֙הֶל֙ עַל־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן וַיָּ֜שֶׂם אֶת־מִכְסֵ֥ה הָאֹ֛הֶל עָלָ֖יו מִלְמָ֑עְלָה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה	19		And he spread the tent over the dwelling-place, and set the covering of the tent over it from above it, as Yahweh commanded Moses.	3d	4C	25 10
וַיִּקַּ֞ח וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־הָעֵדֻת֙ אֶל־הָ֣אָרֹ֔ן וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הַבַּדִּ֖ים עַל־הָאָרֹ֑ן וַיִּתֵּ֧ן אֶת־הַכַּפֹּ֛רֶת עַל־הָאָרֹ֖ן מִלְמָֽעְלָה	20		And he took and he assigned the testimony to the ark, and set the shafts onto the ark, and he positioned the ark-cover onto the ark from above.	3c	4C	25 15
וַיָּבֵ֣א אֶת־הָאָרֹן֮ אֶל־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֒ וַיָּ֗שֶׂם אֵ֚ת פָּרֹ֣כֶת הַמָּסָ֔ךְ וַיָּ֕סֶךְ עַ֖ל אֲר֣וֹן הָעֵד֑וּת כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה	21		And he brought the ark to the dwelling-place, and set the veil of the screen, to screen over the ark of the testimony, as Yahweh commanded Moses.	3d	4C	30 10
וַיִּתֵּ֤ן אֶת־הַשֻּׁלְחָן֙ בְּאֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד עַ֛ל יֶ֥רֶךְ הַמִּשְׁכָּ֖ן צָפֹ֑נָה מִח֖וּץ לַפָּרֹֽכֶת	22		And he positioned the table in the tent of engagement on the flank of the dwelling-place northward, outside of the veil.	3d	4C	21 6

וְאֵת֙ מִזְבַּ֣ח הָעֹלָ֔ה שָׂ֕ם פֶּ֖תַח מִשְׁכַּ֣ן אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֑ד וַיַּ֣עַל עָלָ֗יו אֶת־הָעֹלָה֙ וְאֶת־הַמִּנְחָ֔ה כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה	29		And the altar of the burnt offering he put at the door of the dwelling-place of the tent of engagement, and he offered up on it the burnt offering and the gift, as Yahweh commanded Moses.	3d	4B	16 24
וַיָּ֙שֶׂם֙ אֶת־הַכִּיֹּ֔ר בֵּֽין־אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵ֖ד וּבֵ֣ין הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּתֵּ֥ן שָׁ֛מָּה מַ֖יִם לְרָחְצָֽה	30		And he set up the laver between the tent of engagement and the altar, and he gave water there for washing.	3d	4B	18 9
וְרָחֲצ֣וּ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ מֹשֶׁ֖ה וְאַהֲרֹ֣ן וּבָנָ֑יו אֶת־יְדֵיהֶ֖ם וְאֶת־רַגְלֵיהֶֽם	31		And Moses and Aaron and his children washed from it, their hands and their feet.	3e	4B	16 9
בְּבֹאָ֞ם אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֗ד וּבְקָרְבָתָ֛ם אֶל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ יִרְחָ֑צוּ כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר צִוָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה אֶת־מֹשֶֽׁה	32		When they went into the tent of engagement and approached to the altar, they washed, as Yahweh commanded Moses.	3d	4B	20 10
וַיָּ֣קֶם אֶת־הֶחָצֵ֗ר סָבִיב֙ לַמִּשְׁכָּ֣ן וְלַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ וַיִּתֵּ֕ן אֶת־מָסַ֖ךְ שַׁ֣עַר הֶחָצֵ֑ר וַיְכַ֥ל מֹשֶׁ֖ה אֶת־הַמְּלָאכָֽה	33		And he raised up the court surrounding the dwelling-place and the altar, and he positioned the screen of the gate of the court, and Moses finished the lines of work.	3e	4B	28 8
וַיְכַ֥ס הֶעָנָ֖ן אֶת־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֑ד וּכְב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה מָלֵ֖א אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן	34		And the cloud covered the tent of engagement, and the glory of Yahweh filled the dwelling-place.	3e	4B	10 10
וְלֹא־יָכֹ֣ל מֹשֶׁ֗ה לָבוֹא֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל מוֹעֵ֔ד כִּֽי־שָׁכַ֥ן עָלָ֖יו הֶעָנָ֑ן וּכְב֣וֹד יְהוָ֔ה מָלֵ֖א אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּֽן	35		And Moses could not enter into the tent of engagement because the cloud dwelt over it, and the glory of Yahweh filled the dwelling-place.	3e	4B	19 10
וּבְהֵעָל֤וֹת הֶֽעָנָן֙ מֵעַ֣ל הַמִּשְׁכָּ֔ן יִסְע֖וּ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל בְּכֹ֖ל מַסְעֵיהֶֽם	36		And when the cloud ascended above the dwelling-place, the children of Israel began to migrate, in all their migrations.	3e	4C	19 5
וְאִם־לֹ֥א יֵעָלֶ֖ה הֶעָנָ֑ן וְלֹ֣א יִסְע֔וּ עַד־י֖וֹם הֵעָלֹתֽוֹ	37		And if the cloud did not ascend, then they did not migrate until the day of its ascent.	3e	4B	9 10
כִּי֩ עֲנַ֨ן יְהוָ֤ה עַֽל־הַמִּשְׁכָּן֙ יוֹמָ֔ם וְאֵ֕שׁ תִּהְיֶ֥ה לַ֖יְלָה בּ֑וֹ לְעֵינֵ֥י כָל־בֵּֽית־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בְּכָל־מַסְעֵיהֶֽם	38		Because the cloud of Yahweh was over the dwelling-place by day, and fire was on it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, in all their migrations.	3e	4C	18 13
