Deuteronomy 1

Sometimes it is curious to begin at the beginning. Deuteronomy was the book that a former teacher of mine, Peter Craigie, focused on. I cannot think about that book without remembering Prof. Craigie. I learned too little from him. What a great story teller he was and how he so easily undermined one's own prejudices. I can still remember his story of the confrontation of a Sunday morning walker with a strict pastor on the hills of Scotland. I recall his brogue but cannot imitate it. The issue was 'too much walking on the Sabbath'. And the response from the walker was, there are many things that the Laird and I agree on, but here we differ.

It turns out, a little to my surprise, that Deuteronomy is the book I have done the most on of the 20 or so books that I have not completed. From a guesswork point of view, the computer now thinks it knows about 75% of this book. So - why not start at its beginning. It is also that other book that starts on a note other than the tonic. As if to say: I am continuing a story that, if I have read the first four books, I already know. (Of course I haven't completed the first four - read them in my youth in English, but that's hardly a suitable close reading - too many unquestioned assumptions.)

I am leaving in the column for first note (Fn) when it is not the default. Then you know at least two notes in every verse that has a rest, the first and the rest note (at the 'carriage' return - now there's an archaism). This is a very unhappy chapter, recalling failure in the face of the success to be found in the next generation. What constitutes faith? When is this God with us? And how do we avoid triumphalism?

in the wilderness, in the steppe, in the forefront of Suf, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazerot and Di Zahab.

and they will return us a word concerning the way which we should go up to it, and the cities which we will enter into.
3e 4C 30

and they returned us a word, and they said, The land is good that Yahweh our God is giving to us.

but Yahweh would not hear with your voice, and would not give ear to you.
3e 4C 11
16
וַתֵּשְׁב֥וּ בְקָדֵ֖שׁ יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֑ים

as the days which you had already settled.
