Deuteronomy 8

A reprise. Way back in 2012, I sang this at church for the lesson in the early days of my learning the use of the accents. I am surprised it was so long ago. My transcriptions standards are improved but there's still much to do to decide the mode of each chapter and not just to use the default mode. I think the church was also very brave to let the experiments begin.

When I read it today I still feel the love behind the plea of Yahweh to remember the commandment. Am I still intrigued by 'the postponement of the lowest note'?

Honestly, I can't believe this was 4 years ago! Sometimes I have trouble believing anything though.

Do note that the lesson for Thanksgiving (which this is) should start at verse 6, not the middle of a thought, or the middle of the music (also obvious) at verse 7. Why would the church play down the commandment with its choice of lesson. Without the commandment that we are to love God and our neighbour, what do we have? There is no (i.e. it is a non-existent) conflict between commandment and grace. Even if you take commandment as plural (which it isn't in this case), even if you take all as every, legalism is not implied, simply dependence on the instruction (Torah) of God. Who wants to live without God's instruction? (Read the psalms.)

Here's the music with English libretto

Deuteronomy 8 Fn Min Max Syll
1 All the commandment that I am commanding you today you will keep watch to do,
so that you will live and increase and go in and possess the land which Yahweh swore to your ancestors.

so that he afflicted you to prove you to know what is in your heart to keep his commandments or not.

3 And he afflicted you and he let you hunger and he fed you manna that not you did know and your ancestors did not know,
so that he might have you know that not on the bread alone does the earthling live, that on all that emerges from the mouth of Yahweh the earthling lives.

הַעִדֹ֤תִי בָכֶם֙ הַיּ֔וֹם כִּ֥י אָבֹ֖ד תֹּאבֵדֽוּן
19 And it will happen that if forgetting you forget Yahweh your God and you walk after other gods and serve them and worship them,
I testify among you today that perishing you will perish.

inasmuch as you did not hear with the voice of Yahweh your God.
