Judges 17

The narrator (by varying the spelling of Micah among other turns of phrase) seems to sound a note of sardonic anticipation for Micah in this chapter, and the Levite sounds like both derelict and sponge.

How curious that a supreme holy would be alluded to in this chapter when there seems to be a certain amount of disorderly behaviour. Perhaps it's time to address the tabernacle and the sacrificial system.

Who is whose father in this odd set of words?

Then said his mother, Blessed be you, my child, of Yahweh.

וַיָּ֛שֶׁב אֶת־אֶֽלֶף־וּמֵאָ֥ה הַכֶּ֖סֶף לְאִמּ֑וֹ
וַתֹּ֣אמֶר אִמּ֡וֹ הַקְדֵּ֣שׁ הִקְדַּ֣שְׁתִּי אֶת־הַכֶּסֶף֩ לַיהוָ֨ה מִיָּדִ֜י לִבְנִ֗י לַֽעֲשׂוֹת֙ פֶּ֣סֶל וּמַסֵּכָ֔ה וְעַתָּ֖ה אֲשִׁיבֶ֥נּוּ לָֽךְ
3 And he returned the thousand, one hundred silver pieces to his mother.
And his mother said, The holy. I have made the silver holy to Yahweh, from my hands to my son, to make a graven image and of molten metal, so now I will return them to you.

וַתִּקַּ֣ח אִמּוֹ֩ מָאתַ֨יִם כֶּ֜סֶף וַתִּתְּנֵ֣הוּ לַצּוֹרֵ֗ף וַֽיַּעֲשֵׂ֙הוּ֙ פֶּ֣סֶל וּמַסֵּכָ֔ה וַיְהִ֖י בְּבֵ֥ית מִיכָֽיְהוּ
4 And he returned the silver to his mother.
And his mother took two hundred silver pieces and gave them to the refiner, and he made a graven image and of molten metal, and it was in the house of Mikayahu.

וְהָאִ֣ישׁ מִיכָ֔ה ל֖וֹ בֵּ֣ית אֱלֹהִ֑ים
וַיַּ֤עַשׂ אֵפוֹד֙ וּתְרָפִ֔ים וַיְמַלֵּ֗א אֶת־יַ֤ד אַחַד֙ מִבָּנָ֔יו וַיְהִי־ל֖וֹ לְכֹהֵֽן
5 And the man, (whom we will call) Micah, his was the house of God.
And he made an ephod and healing images and he filled the hand of one from among his children, and he become his priest.

בַּיָּמִ֣ים הָהֵ֔ם אֵ֥ין מֶ֖לֶךְ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל
אִ֛ישׁ הַיָּשָׁ֥ר בְּעֵינָ֖יו יַעֲשֶֽׂה
6 In those days there was no king in Israel.
Everyone did what was upright in its own eyes.

וַיְהִי־נַ֗עַר מִבֵּ֥ית לֶ֙חֶם֙ יְהוּדָ֔ה מִמִּשְׁפַּ֖חַת יְהוּדָ֑ה
וְה֥וּא לֵוִ֖י וְה֥וּא גָֽר־שָֽׁם
7 And there was a youth from Bethlehem of Judah from the family of Judah, and himself a Levite,
and he was a guest there.

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ הָאִ֜ישׁ מֵהָעִ֗יר מִבֵּ֥ית לֶ֙חֶם֙ יְהוּדָ֔ה לָג֖וּר בַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יִמְצָ֑א
וַיָּבֹ֧א הַר־אֶפְרַ֛יִם עַד־בֵּ֥ית מִיכָ֖ה לַעֲשׂ֥וֹת דַּרְכּֽוֹ
8 And the man came out of the city, from Bethlehem of Judah, to reside wherever he could find.
And he came to mount Ephraim to the house of Micah in the making of his way.

וַיֹּאמֶר־ל֥וֹ מִיכָ֖ה מֵאַ֣יִן תָּב֑וֹא
וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו לֵוִ֣י אָנֹ֗כִי מִבֵּ֥ית לֶ֙חֶם֙ יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאָנֹכִ֣י הֹלֵ֔ךְ לָג֖וּר בַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶמְצָֽא
9 And Micah said to him, From where do you come?
And he said to him, I am a Levite, from Bethlehem of Judah, and I myself walk to reside wherever I can find.

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ ל֨וֹ מִיכָ֜ה שְׁבָ֣ה עִמָּדִ֗י וֶֽהְיֵה־לִי֮ לְאָ֣ב וּלְכֹהֵן֒ וְאָנֹכִ֨י אֶֽתֶּן־לְךָ֜ עֲשֶׂ֤רֶת כֶּ֙סֶף֙ לַיָּמִ֔ים וְעֵ֥רֶךְ בְּגָדִ֖ים וּמִחְיָתֶ֑ךָ
וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ הַלֵּוִֽי
10 And Micah said to him, Settle with me, and be for me father and priest, and I myself will give to you ten silver pieces for the days, and will arrange for garments and your living.
And the Levite strutted.

וַיּ֥וֹאֶל הַלֵּוִ֖י לָשֶׁ֣בֶת אֶת־הָאִ֑ישׁ
וַיְהִ֤י הַנַּ֙עַר֙ ל֔וֹ כְּאַחַ֖ד מִבָּנָֽיו
11 f And the Levite was humoured to settle with the man.
And the youth became to him as one of his children.

וַיְמַלֵּ֤א מִיכָה֙ אֶת־יַ֣ד הַלֵּוִ֔י וַיְהִי־ל֥וֹ הַנַּ֖עַר לְכֹהֵ֑ן
וַיְהִ֖י בְּבֵ֥ית מִיכָֽה
12 And Micah filled the hand of the Levite and the youth became his priest,
and was in the house of Micah.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר מִיכָ֔ה עַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּֽי־יֵיטִ֥יב יְהוָ֖ה לִ֑י
כִּ֧י הָיָה־לִ֛י הַלֵּוִ֖י לְכֹהֵֽן
13 And Micah said, Now I know that Yahweh will do good for me,
for the Levite has become my priest.
