Isaiah 52

You can't say I am saving the best till the last because I am nowhere near the last and won't be for much time to come.

I was sent here by Nahum of course with his anticipation or reflection of verse 7 below. These are the shared words

Who shared from whom, I wonder. Whatever, this chapter is meat and potatoes for the writers of the NT, both in its excluding and its including.

There are at least three different roots in Hebrew that are conflated into circumcise in the English versions. My choices so far are כרת cut off, used in the context of cutting a covenant, נמל cut down, מול circumcise, and ארל foreskin. I continue to refrain from gloss conflation as far as I am able.

There are similarly several conflations with respect to the word sprinkle in traditional translations. The word below, נזה, is not used in Leviticus for the sprinkling (זרק) of blood on the altar. I think it would be irresponsible to conflate here, as if to deliberately associate ritual sacrifice with this destruction, and thereby short-circuiting thought in the reader to theological and Christological theories that are nearly a millennium away. We certainly do see the Anointed, and Anointing in Tanach. But it is not by simple word-association. It is in the obedience of the human Jesus to a calling that is by no means obvious or dare I say perspicuous to a superficial reading of Scripture.

Don't get me wrong. I know where I have been, and I hope to continue maturing. Childishness has its place but it won't do as the end-point.

1 Be roused, be roused, be clothed with your strength, Zion.
Be clothed with the garments of your adornment, Jerusalem, city of holiness, for not again will the fore-skinned or the unclean come into you any more.

Open yourself from the bonds around your neck, captive daughter of Zion. S
