Qohelet 1 / Ecclesiastes 1

Qohelet or Ecclesiastes - same book. Why two names? One is from the Hebrew for the strange word that occurs in this book alone, קהלת. The other is from the Greek sharing a few letters. Both are perhaps related to the assembly. Qhl in Hebrew, Ecclesiastical meaning like church in Greek - hence the idea that the speaker is a preacher. See the introductory paragraph in the Wiki entry here.

No preacher should be either so clever or so droll. The book is part of the 'wisdom' tradition, but I continue my testing of the word shrewdness which often is a suitable substitute for wisdom. Maybe there should be a shrewdness tradition.

I have left in the syllable counts before and after the atnah to see if there are any patterns. I wonder what the music is like?

This is an evil business God has given to the children of the earthling to be busy with.

Qohelet 1 Fn Min Max
1 Things declaimed by David's child, king in Jerusalem. 3e 4B
2 An utter futility, touts Qohelet, an utter futility, total futility. 3e 4C
3 What is the advantage for an earthling,
in all its toil that it toils, under the sun?
3e 4A
4 C A generation proceeds and a generation recedes and the earth for ever stands. 3e 4C
5 And the sun rises and the sun recedes,
and to its place it bears down where it rose.
3d 4B
6 Ambling from the southern region, and surrounding to the north,
surrounding around, ambles the wind and to its rounds the wind returns.
3e 4C
7 All the torrents amble to the sea and the sea is not full.
To the place that the torrents amble, there they themselves returning amble.
3d 4C
8 All these things keep on working. No-one can speak them into being.
Eye is not satisfied seeing and unfilled is ear hearing.
3e 4B
9 What is that is, it's that that is and what is that's done, it's that that's done.
And there is nothing at all new, under the sun.
3e 4B
10 f Is there a thing of which it is said, See - this is new?
It already is in the eras that are from before us.
3d 4B
11 f There is no remembrance of those beginnings.
And even of what is after that will be, there will not be for them remembrance with those who will be after.
3e 4C
12 I, Qohelet, I have become king over Israel in Jerusalem. 3d 4B
13 And I gave my heart to search out and explore in shrewdness about all that is done under the heavens.
This is an evil business God has given to the children of the earthling to be busy with.
3c 4C
14 I have seen all the deeds that are done under the sun.
And note this well, It is total futility and tending of wind.
3d 4B
15 The subverted cannot be straightened,
and the defective cannot be fathomed.
3e 4B
16 I myself spoke with my heart, saying, I, note well, have made myself great and added to shrewdness concerning all that were in my presence concerning Jerusalem.
And my heart saw much shrewdness and knowledge.
3d 4C
17 And I gave my heart to know shrewdness and to know boasting and insight too.
I know that even this, it is tending of wind.
3e 4C
18 d For in much shrewdness there is much grief,
and the one who adds to knowledge adds to sorrow.
