Proverbs 22

This chapter has lots of good advice that spoke to my concerns as I read it. There are also some favorite ones for those who are convinced by punishment as a model for behaviour. It astonishes me that Christendom should so have emphasized punishment. There is of course no use of that word in Bob's Bible. There are plenty of consequences and there is plenty of violence. But one human punishing another or being punished by G-d is not an option I entertain.

What do I make of violence attributed to G-d? Simply speaking: If it is really G-d, it is not my problem. May be it is just a false attribution of the writer. May be I should interpret it analogically. Definitely it is not a model for imitation as if we and our children could escape the consequences of such action.

Is it possible to have strength and power without self-interest? I don't know. That is supposedly the character of Jesus. His imitators are rare even though those who claim his name are many. I am equally struck by the intellectual, emotional, mental, and psychological violence that is pervasive in our cultures. All those games we play. Perhaps this chapter will help. Plant your foot in gentleness. Do not be impetuous in trade.

You can tell I am not a fan of the King James translation or its recent reception history. The undermining of treachery can take many hundreds of years of human history. Is this Word of God treacherous ground? Yeah bro, if you can't see your own face, it is. Who has a visible face?

Note the three verses beginning on a B. I sense much more coherence in this as a chapter than in many of the other chapters of Proverbs we have done.
